Kotobuki has the best sushi in the area and arguably on long island. Even their take out is made to perfection

Have been going for 20 years. Sushi and other dishes always great and fresh. Have been doing takeout last several years as restaurant is usually busy. They could use extra help on weekends as crowds and takeout get crazy. My suggestion is to order early in the day and bring home for dinner later. I pick up before they close for afternoon and stick in fridge. Saves you from dealing with many door dash drivers which can be a 20 minute wait. It’s worth the wait but after 20 years I’ve learned to plan ahead.

Last Friday, my wife and I found ourselves wandering through the Hauppauge, NY neighborhood after 9:30 p.m., searching for a place to eat. Having been to Kotobuki before, we decided it was worth revisiting—and it turned out to be a wonderful choice.

We both started with hot green tea, which arrived alongside warm towels to cleanse our hands. Oh my God—what a soothing therapy for the hands before dinner! The tea was piping hot, with a grassy, fresh flavor that instantly awakened the senses.

Next came the asari soup, a ritual must-have for me. Its delicate, savory broth was hot and satisfying, with just the right balance—not overpowering, but deeply comforting. We followed it with an otoshi salad, a mix of pickled cucumbers offering intriguing flavors. While it was enjoyable, it’s not a dish I’d personally crave again.

Our main dish was a standout: fried soft-shell crab, served beneath a crisp julienned salad and topped with a small ball of avocado and tuna sashimi. It was packed with flavor—each bite a delightful contrast of textures and tastes.

Service was prompt and attentive, and the food arrived quickly. Everything was delicious enough to make us want to return—and recommend it to others looking for a satisfying late-night bite.

Kotobuki is one of those places that is always busy but you also know you're not going there to have a romantic dinner. It is very tight. The table next to you is so close that you literally hear the person's conversation. The employees always seem stressed.

Now to the food. The sushi is good. I do enjoy it. Probably one of the better sushi restaurants on Long Island. You will wait for the food. The online ordering system is terrible. One thing I will say is that they definitely have the best 'spicy mayo'. If you enjoy spicy mayo with your sushi get theirs.

All in all, enjoy the food. It is good. But don't go there for the ambiance....go there to enjoy the food and leave.

Hope that helps....

We have been going to Kotobuki for many years and we have learned to play the game. You have to get there early for the first seating so that you can get a table. If you get there late, you will wait and wait and wait. The restaurant is very small. When the store next door went up for rent, the owners of Kotobuki should have expanded their restaurant. It is far too crowded. Because of that the staff is overwhelmed and the noise level is very high. However, the food is the best that we have ever had in any Japanese restaurant and is worth all of the negatives

amazing sushi, as always! We get sushi here when ever we have a chance. The wait for carry out is longer than many restaurants but it's worth it!
