Our experience of eating out at Chatham-Kent Flapjacks Restaurants is more exciting for us than it was when we’d eaten out at any Denny’s Restaurant located in the Metropolitan Toronto Area!

First time, we ate at the Flapjacks Diner 161 Richmond Street was during our Summer visit to Chatham around mid-morning July 27, 2023. We were fortunate in getting a booth table during a peak of activity during the morning breakfast service. A short time later, a number of patrons adjacent to our booth had departed as we were in the midst of enjoying our food.

Suddenly, there was a moment when I expected to see Orson Welles coming into view like a scene from The Lady From Shanghai (1948) as we were greeted with a loud bang as a huge make-over renovation mirror decided to jump-off it perch from an architectural alcove, the recess section of wall behind our booth.

This was an event when I knew management had a healthy grasp of knowing who to have on hand to operate the restaurant effectively!

First our Waitress name Linda came over expressing concern for our safety, a gal on many occasions I’ve witnessed multi-tasking like a real professional. Then Waitress Lori quickly came over as Linda had already accessed the situation and begun to clean up the shards of sharp broken glass mirror. Lori has been a major player in helping pinch-hit for the Flapjacks Restaurants, frequently filling in a staff roster whether it be at Flapjacks Lunch Shack 25 McFarlane Avenue, lovingly referred to by some of us patrons as ‘Flapjacks Snack Shack’, or driving all the way to Tilbury when Flapjacks Four 58 Queen Street North was still operational.

Because there had been such a dichotomy between the loud bang and the dead silence that followed the noise, a stocky man looking like he came from central casting for the Game of Thrones television show came out of kitchen ready for bear to handle any situation. I remember Waitress Lori turning towards his direction looking wide-eyed as he came out inquiring about what had happened, gladly & happily informing the strong action man all was well.

The food served was comforting when my wife and I came to Flapjacks, seeking nourishment during the days of last November & December 2023 after we’d been working non-stop unpacking and setting-up our newly purchased home in Chatham. During most of our visits, falling around 10:30 & 11:30 a.m. at the Richmond Street location, we were treated with front row seats adjacent to the window facing the daily trains passing by, featuring the remnants of the Canadian Pacific and Canadian National Railway freight cars. We frequently inquire whether management could kindly arrange for the same passing of the train again during our next visit.

Food – Four Stars I found their Omelettes and Breakfast Sausages to be over-cooked.

Service was great but the dining area is small and congested after a few tables are filled up by other patrons.

We went to Flapjacks on the corner of Richmond and Lacroix. Months ago we tried the broasted chicken and it was ok, first time eating anything other than breakfast. So I keep seeing the Thursday night steak special and my husband and I thought we'd try it. It was busy but we found a table, waitress came and we ordered the steak and chicken(both were specials) The waitress brought us water and then the waitress started. I almost instantly regretted ordering the steak as I watched the guy behind us fighting to cut his...it looked very tough!
So our waitress got busy doing the cash register and handing orders to the 5 delivery guys that came in. The other waitress (older lady) never acknowledged us once and we sat for the next half hour watching her customers get served and the delivery guys take orders out. A table of 3 guests arrived 15-20 minutes after we did..got seated and waited on and got their meals. At this point no one including the older waitress, who walked by us 10 times acknowledged us still so we walked out. Very bad experience and we won't be back! Use to be a good breakfast place but lacks greatly as a decent dinner location.
We went to one of many other casual dining places in town and got great service and the steak was great!!

Good food and good prices, small town dinner feel ( I like that), tables are a little small for a group once all the plates come out but otherwise great breakfast experience.

The ladies that were working today were amazing and very attentive. They were always 2 steps ahead of us and do a great job keeping the place clean and organized. The lady that we dealt with more often made my kids feel very comfortable and made sure they were super happy. I love the lunch food at Flapjacks (usually go to the McFarlane location), and was so pleased that they had the same delicious coleslaw and fish and chips at this location. If you go here, definitely get the gravy, it's so so good.
