We were craving some old fashioned Italian food and we’ve previously tried Tesoro, so decided to give Brunello at 27 on Fourth a chance. With a 4.6 Google Review rating, we had moderately hopeful expectations.

While Brunello’s does provide the obvious staples of a stereotypical Italian menu, it was, sadly, mostly disappointing.

I started with a negroni, while my guest had the carpaccio. The negroni certainly wasn’t offensive, but neither was it particularly well-crafted. Hard to tell if it was pre-batched, but if it was, it didn’t hit the mark. A negroni is a fairly straightforward recipe. This wasn’t quite there.

The carpaccio was similarly not especially well-received. I mean, it wasn’t that the meat was off or had any major consistency issues, it just didn’t feel right. And the presentation was circa 1970-1985. White plate, grill-marked bread, dollop of parm shavings in the middle, a single line of olive oil and cracked pepper.

I mean, it’s fine. It’s just not new. Or interesting. And if the taste profile doesn’t elevate it, it’s just boring and not particularly well-done Italian-inspired food that can be found in many many places.

The pasta came. We had gnocchi Pomodoro and ravioli con funghi.

Again, I just felt it was very uninspired. And I could be wrong, but it really didn’t feel as though the pasta was house-made, especially in the case of the gnocchi. The ravioli, in particular, was overcooked and each parcel had split (as you can see in the photos). The sauce was a tad too rich and overly creamed.

I guess if you can’t cook Italian and haven’t had really good pasta and sauce, this may feel like “a true Italian experience”, but having had expertly prepared Italian in multiple places, having made damn good pasta dishes myself and knowing a true Italian experience, this wasn’t it.

There was dessert too, but it’s not really worth a detailed review, because it was cheesecake.

I know this review sounds harsh, but when you go to an “Italian restaurant” and the quality is sort of on par with a generic chain restaurant serving everything from burgers, Tex-mex, pub food and pasta, then are you really distinguishing yourself?

It’s not terrible. It just wasn’t really good.

And the decor is a flashback to Italian-inspired restaurants from the 80’s to the 90’s, with the walls painted to mimic aged and cracked Italian plaster, replete with Chianti bottles in straw.

My apologies to the owners and staff if you feel this is unwarranted, but perhaps it’s time to mix things up and create a more authentic menu with a few inspired twists.

look, food is great.
We had to wait 1.5 hours for the appetizer, and main finally showed up after 2 hours of waiting.
the table that came before us got their main after we paid the bill. which was a whopping 2.5hr wait.

save yourself the wait. go somewhere else. no pasta is worth 2.5hrs wait.

If you read reviews from other patrons please recognize that this restaurant does its’ best to discretely create the best dining experience for all. I was enjoying date night, and I have to say I love kids and have 8 of my own, but there was a table with rowdy children next to us and the owner quietly closed the doors so we could have some peace. Isn’t that respectful? Two other tables got up and left all because of these children which was unfortunate for this family run business. This world has gotten so selfish that people walk around not knowing how they impact others. Then they take the time to write one sided incorrect reviews without realizing that pre ordering food and leaving without paying a dime is very impactful to a small restaurant. Brunellos creates ambiance and combines attentive service with high quality delicious food. Don’t believe everything you read. Try it for yourself. You will never meet people that care more, and give you a little taste of Italy in Collingwood.

I will start by saying having dined at thousands of restaurants I have never walked out of one before we started however there is a first time for everything. We planned a special birthday for my 7 year old daughter. We were two families for 4 each with two children each (ages 2 through 7). For those that have kids you may understand that as soon as they sit at a table they become hungry. Knowing this and to alleviate any issues with the restaurant I proceeded to place our family style orders in advance, which the restaurant seemingly accomodated and welcomed. Our reservations were for 7pm and when we arrived the restaurant was not full. We were barely acknowledge and after a while we were then seated. After about 10 minutes someone came to the table to ask if we wanted water. Then we waited and waited and waited. As the time passed the children grew increasingly "hangrey" and there was a coupled next to us that I assume wanted a quite evening so they asked to be moved which is completely reasonable. After 42 minutes of waiting since they brought our water I went in search of our server. In the meantime guests seated after us had already been served drinks and orders taken. At this points the kids were extremely hungry and I explained this was the reason I pre-ordered. The server again disappeared. Our kids were being loud I assume because the. The owners wife simply closed the doors on us to this private room without even saying anything. That was the last straw. After 50 minutes of waiting and 2 bottles of water we got up and left. We had high expectations for this occasion and unfortunately it seemed as we were a bother to them. The lack of professionalism and hospitality shocked me. While the food may have been good I would never recommend anyone going here. We fortunately stumbled upon a fabulous Italian restaurant a few steps away (Tesoro) they graciously accomodated us at the last minute, got a table ready for 8 in 5 minutes it took us to walk over. Food and drinks came out within 20 minutes of our arrival and the taste was absolutely amazing. We ended up buying 10 jars of their pasta sauce as it was so good.

This restaurant was an absolute delight to visit! My mother-in-law, myself and my partner came here to celebrate her 40th birthday while visiting Collingwood for the day. We were surprised to learn that this cute restaurant, nestled in a neighborhood home, was a family run restaurant! The food and service were excellent and they were very accommodating with holding a birthday cake, plating, and serving it! It really made our night feel very special. Not too many restaurants will go out of their way like this so I can’t recommend this place enough!

This is one of the best Italian restaurants we have ever been to. Located in a beautiful century home, the space is both welcoming and warm. Wonderful servers who were not only friendly but knowledgeable about the entire menu. My childhood friends Mom made the most delicious gnocchi and I have been trying to find something that even comes close but have not found it until now. Everything was delicious and authentic but the gnocchi was as delicious as my memories from childhood.
