We used to rate Hungry Sumo at 5 stars for the last 6 years. But going back for our anniversary, things were very different. Red Wine selection was pared down to a 10.5% house red by the 5oz glass that tasted powdered, or a $75 bottle of Cab Sav. I offered to pay more if they cracked open the decent red but no go. The excuse was tarrifs and sourcing wine local. Really? Niagara or Prince Edward county isn't far. Menu selection has also diminished with our favorite spider crab dish and roll gone, leaving no real crab choices and fewer entrees. When we brought this to their attention, the waiter apologized and said he'd talk to the manager, but not much else from management. Not sure we'll be going back. At that price point we expect better. Otherwise service was good. We spent half of our normal check so I guess the menu changes may not be adding up profit wise.

Trekked here from our nearby hotel during a cold winter evening and ordered two curry rice with karaage and some drinks to warm up.
The karaage was one of the best we’ve ever had; it was crispy on the outside yet tender and juicy on the inside! Curry was seasoned very well but we found the consistency to be more runny than expected.
The spicy cucumber salad was light and refreshing on the palate. I do wish it had some more time to marinate in the sauce so the flavours penetrate.
My partner also loved their miso soup. Super warm and comforting especially on a cold day!
Service was very quick and efficient however I did expect it to be just a tad friendlier given the previous reviews.
Portion size was great - definitely won’t be leaving like a hungry sumo! Overall, a very hearty meal in a very quaint setting. 🤤

So yummy! My new favorite sushi spot in Collingwood! Great service and delicious food. The butter on butter roll was my favorite, very fresh and a nice smokey flavor

My boyfriend and I have been to The Hungry Sumo twice now, and it’s officially our go-to sushi spot in Collingwood. From the moment you walk in, the staff are incredibly welcoming, friendly, and professional, which makes the whole experience even better. The food is absolutely amazing! Fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared every time. We also love that they offer local wine, which pairs perfectly with the food. On top of all that, the pricing is beyond reasonable for the quality you’re getting. We’ve been impressed every visit and will definitely keep coming back. Highly recommend!

Cute little resturant, great drink options. Their sushi was so fresh. Never had butter fish before, and now it might be my new favorite sushi.

The restaurant is located inside a renovated residential house. The service is warm and welcoming. They seated us despite we arrived only 1 hour before closing.
We ordered the curry dinner and the udon noodle soup, both with karaage.
The karaage is fried to perfection, crunchy on the outside and super tender on the inside. The udon soup is flavourful, without being overly salty. The curry was also the same. Both dishes taste of quintessential Japanese comfort food. The generous green onion on the udon soup provided the sweetness that udon soup needs, but is often missing in other restaurants. The curry has an abundant amount of vegetables, which seem to be cooked into the curry, juices and all, providing a plethora of flavours to the curry.
We also ordered the Drip Too Much Roll (we chuckled at the name). It appears to be something of their own creation. Despite the unconventional ingredients (crispy fried seaweed roll on top of another roll, then all topped with crunchy noodles) it is subtly delicious. The flavours of the rolls themselves are subtle, but when you pair it with a little bit of wasabi, the taste just dances in your mouth.
The place isn't fancy, it feels like you stepped into a cozy home and the food tastes like the chefs wanted to share their own favorite dishes from childhood. The dishes may look plain, and you may not get Instagramable photos here, but it will make you feel like you're home... If your home also have a bar ;)

Great value! Check it out if you're visiting Blue Mountain.
This is our favorite spot to enjoy sushi when we come to Collingwood!
Everything is always fresh and service is always quick! If you are on your way to the ski hill, or just spending a day in Collingwoods downtown, I would recommend checking it out.

First time here today and absolutely amazing. My daughter says it’s the best sushi ever, and I have to agree — the best we’ve had in a long time!
Average sushi place in collingwood.
Not a big varieties of recipe, although good enough for the sushi night, if you’re not looking for something fancy.
Staff is very friendly and warm welcoming, hospitality is 10/10
Ambience is Okish. Should give it a try if in or around Collingwood.

Great place, awesome food. Been here a few times now. Always consistent.
A little disappointed the kitchen couldn't make a simple custom roll for our little guy. All it requires is a spring roll rolled into a sushi roll with rice. How hard is that?
It's the little things that go a long way

This is an incredible gem in Collingwood. Dishes we ordered included the chicken udon, maki platter, miso soup and mochi. Everyone loved the food. It's the best sushi I've had in years. Even my child was impressed and she's not easily impressed. We had attentive service. Prices were reasonable. We loved the atmosphere of the old home, as well. We look forward to a return visit. Thank you!
