I grew up in the Kawartha Lakes, and visited the Haliburton area growing up. Three years ago my husband and I relocated here from Peterborough, Ontario during the pandemic. When we first arrived here, we were homeless and living in a hotel and later, a tent. My husband and I were walking around one morning, looking for a good cup of coffee on the main street, and we happened to wander into Up River Trading Co., and we immediately fell in love! The cheerful "good morning" that greeted us as we walked through the door, made us forget about whatever we had been venting about before entering. The lady behind the counter spoke to us like she was speaking to old friends, and we quickly became her favourite customers, and her, our favourite barista (until she quit and moved). The manger is a wonderful lady, who we've come to love, and are on a first name basis with (then again, she always seems to know all her regulars by name...and our orders by heart). It's always nice to catch up with her, and have a friendly chat. The younger ones that work there are so sweet! Up River offers a wide variety of items (house/cottage wares, beverages, snacks, candles and trinkets, blankets, clothes, photographs and art pieces and more) that make great gifts, for you and your loved ones. They also have some very cool items for the kiddos! If you are looking for great coffee, atmosphere, and service, or need to find that perfect "something", no matter the season, Up River Trading Co. is JUST RIGHT!

It was my first time visiting Haliburton. Rented a cottage and came across this shop/cafe in their town. I was so surprised they had Balzac’s coffee since i’m an OG drinker of their coffee even at home that’s what we drink. Order two vanilla iced latte’s to go and oh boy it came in a huge cup. Super worth it in my opinion, I’m glad to see small towns with good cafes!

I absolutely love the knowledgeable staff and all the delicious goodies! I tried a few new beverages before I found my favourite & now I know exactly what I want everytime I enter! The staff are amazing and kind! I always find new decor and household items everytime I visit!
Wow, what lovely staff.... Ethan and Joselyn are so wonderful. Such friendly and kind humans. Great hires! Nice selection of local goods and cozy atmosphere. Highly recommend.
