Close your eyes. Imagine a small-town Karen-stereotype hockey-mommy white North-American live-laugh-love person. The good, the bad, the quaint of it all. Now imagine that person imagining what a third-wave coffee shop should be : you get Back to the Grind. It is clean, well kept, warm, one should give it that. But so many things seem off, as if done out of a misguided need to conform to imperatives no one seems to have asked for. QR code menus (posted on an actual chalkboard!) despite having a simple offering; only eight sit-down spots despite having the empty floorspace where most cafés could fit 60 ; prices of a prime MTL third-wave, but quality of a decent Second Cup ; upsold products that seem redundant : pulp fiction volumes, despite being in front of a bookstore, made-in-somewhere-far candles and kitsch decoration, etc. In all fairness, while it may be underwhelming with regards to all it could be, it should be commended for being all it is, given that it is in likely one of the harshest imaginable environments for such a business. Do check it out if you have the misfortune of being in Kapuskasing !

Cozy little café with nice decor. They have gluten free options (that are made, or baked entire seperate to avoid cross contamination). The lady who owns it cannot have gluten, so she takes it seriously. They also have books, candles, teas and knick snacks for sale. They have a cozy reading book and great atmosphere. They have daily specials and really try to do neat and fun combos with locally sourced meats, vegetables, fruits and cheese. I hear the sushi is quite good though I didn't try it. Gotta try this place for lunch, or coffee and a baked treat!

The food here is so good, you’d swear an angel is working miracles in the back kitchen. Easily one of the best sandwich spots in town. A++

Everything you need in a cafe - Great menu options - Thoughtfully designed space with intentionally selected store options, like books, candles, tea, etc. A true Gem of KAP

I was in Kapuskasing for a brief visit and ordered the cafe latte coffee at Back to the Grind. I drink only one cup of coffee a day, so I want it to be good. I was delighted, what a wonderful coffee, perfect for my morning, just the right of amount of bold, eartly, even a little bit bitter that can be mellowed out with milk and sugar.

My wife and I just discovered this great place today, a suggestion from my cousin as we visited my mom who moved to Kap a few years ago. FANTASTIC COFFEE....GREAT VIBE....after purchasing extra bakings...a book..some Xmas presents to bring back to Ottawa, we promised to come back on our next visit.

Such a great place! Usually just grab a coffee/Latte but decided to grab some lunch today. Got the special (butter chicken) and I can't even begin to tell you how good it was. So so so happy. Beyond the great food, the staff is quite attentive and friendly. Highly recommend!

been living in kap for about a year and a half now and have never set foot in this cafe until today (mar. 8, 2024) and got myself an avocado melt (they ran out or didn’t have avocado so they were able to compensate for that which i’m totally okay with!) and a blt wrap for lunch at work tonight and my partner a hot chocolate. while we were waiting, we got to look at some cool things displayed on the shelves and around the cafe itself in the most aesthetic way possible (also purchasable, we got a couple other things too hehe) , and then we got our food. let me just say, the avocado melt was THE best messiest sandwich i have ever had. the runniness of the fried egg makes it creamy, the juiciness from the tomato, the extra bacon made up the perfect chew, the aioli that they make.. just *chefs kiss*. a million percent going back to get that sandwich again, hopefully with avocado for the full experience, can’t wait to truly be taken out of this world. (oh, also their ceiling is really cool)
