My husband Dave and I ordered our vegan wedding cake from Blackhoney and unfortunately ended up regretting our decision. While the cake itself was fine, there were some serious communication and customer service issues we experienced.
Our wedding was on September 21, 2024 and we initially booked them for our cake way back in February. The cake testing we had then with the owner Jenn went very well. We discussed with her a unique cake topper design that is very special to us, and even showed her an image of it to which she said our bakery can definitely make this. We were thrilled to have finally found a place close enough to our wedding venue that will make us a fully vegan wedding cake and deliver.
In April, I sent over an e-mail to Jenn to confirm our cake and topper design and for her to let us know her thoughts. She did respond saying the cake design is great, but nothing about the topper. A few months passed and it's now July, I send another e-mail asking how much our cake and cake topper will cost to make. Jenn responded a few days later saying she will speak to the decorators the next day about pricing and I will have that sent to me a few days later. Neither me or Dave received a response back and at this point it was a month later at the end of August so 1 month away from the wedding. I sent another e-mail out to Jenn to ask for an update to which neither of us received anything back yet again. Fast forward and now we are in September with 2 weeks away from the wedding with no response! It's extremely unprofessional to not get back to your customer, but to add 2 months to that response time? Even worse. I sent another e-mail asking what was going on. I did finally receive a response from Jenn the next day saying that I will have my answers shortly. We did get an e-mail the next day with our cake quote, and was told to resend the cake topper we requested, which to me clearly shows they didn't even bother to look at it at all when I sent it back in April, and after sending another e-mail reminder about it. They said they couldn't make the topper, and mentioned that based on their "usual policy" I was to bring one! So absurd as this "policy" was never once communicated with me or Dave by anyone from the bakery until now. And I on 3 separate occasions asked about our topper design. They suggested I order one from Amazon...as I mentioned earlier, our cake topper has very significant meaning to our union, and cant simply be ordered off Amazon especially being a week away from the wedding when we were already overwhelmed with all the planning. They offered to cover a dozen of our mango cupcakes which we appreciated. Those were delicious and our guests enjoyed them as well. We had to scramble to find someone to take our cake topper order so last minute and thankfully we did find someone to do that. We did not need the extra stress! This all could've been avoided if we received proper and punctual communication from the bakery. We booked them 7 months before the wedding, and despite our attempts to communicate way in advance, nothing was finalized until the week before because of them. I currently work in the wedding industry (10+ years), and based on my experience, I unfortunately would not recommend getting your wedding cake from Blackhoney unless you're willing to risk poor customer service, which I don't think is a good idea for something as important as your wedding day.
Despite everything, I'm glad they have great tasting vegan desserts to offer. Our vegan lemon tier, and vanilla tier were delicious with the triple berry compote. Lemon being our favourite. I wasn't a fan of the chocolate though, tasted a bit too dry. The design we wanted turned out accurate. We were hoping to have the maple butter added, but they told us it was out of stock/season. I don't know why Jenn had it a part of the tasting if it was going to be out of season for our order date? She was aware of our wedding being in September upon booking our ta

We booked a tasting & then ordered a vegan wedding cake (for Aug 24th) back in February. After not hearing from the bakery the week of the wedding, I called to confirm our delivery time & was told they couldn’t locate our file & would need to know what kind of cake we wanted. I said we are 4 days out from the wedding, all of these details were worked out with the owner, Jenn, months ago. The employee said they’d talk to Jenn & get back to me. They called back & left a voicemail saying Jenn would send them our emails and there was mention of vegan cream cheese icing but they don’t have a recipe for that. This didn’t exactly inspire confidence, when were they going to call us? Also, if they didn’t have a recipe for the vegan icing we chose (based on our tasting!!) then what did they serve us? We gave it some thought & decided to just go with a non-vegan cake for our guests to enjoy, it seemed like the simplest way to go & a family member had offered to make us a small vegan cake. I emailed Jenn that same day to let her know. This is where it gets frustrating; waiting for email confirmations, calling & never hearing back from Jenn. This could have been sorted out with a quick call but not once did Jenn ever return our calls. Email was the only communication we had with Jenn until 2 days before the wedding when she finally texted us instead of calling us back. At this point we were so frustrated with trying to communicate with her, getting her to confirm details & with how she spoke to us in general that we decided to cancel our order. It just wasn’t worth the stress anymore. I had paid by e-transfer so it could have been returned anytime but Jenn told us it would be returned the following Friday(Aug 30th). That day came and went with no refund. It didn’t take long to realize that Jenn was choosing to return our payment at her leisure because we had cancelled our order. I followed up every day & there was always a reason it hadn’t been returned & the date kept changing. It was very frustrating that she wasn’t following through on what she had told us. On Sept 2nd (11 days since cancelling)forgetting it was the holiday, I reminded her that she’d told us the payment would be issued Friday, then over the weekend & now we are into Monday-we expect our payment to be returned by the end of the day. She replied with “Sarah, our system will issue the refund. i told you this. it was processed exactly as i told you it would be. Today is a banking holiday. when banks reopen, the system will issue the refund. your negative messages are not helpful.” I’m not sure what was negative about following up on a refund that should have already been returned & expressing frustration over a situation which never should have gotten to this point. I didn’t appreciate being treated like a nuisance by a business owner who wouldn’t return a single phone call or be upfront. There was still no payment on Tues despite the banks being open for a full business day. I messaged Jenn on Sept. 3rd & asked for her word on exactly when we can expect to see our payment returned, we shouldn’t have to keep waiting. The next morning I checked my email & bank account, nothing. At 8:57am I got an email confirmation that Jenn had sent an e-transfer and at 8:58am she messaged me to say I should already have the refund…as if it had been in my account for a while & I just hadn’t noticed. She sent a screen shot of the transfer which conveniently didn’t include the date. She blamed my bank stating she couldn’t control when they released funds into my account, though it was very obvious it had JUST been sent. Jenn added this message with the e-transfer “refund for ordered wedding cake that was cancelled last minute after being made”. Last minute or not; when you lose a customer’s file, won’t return their calls & treat them so poorly what do you expect? Getting straight answers out of Jenn was like pulling teeth & she has a great way of making you feel like you are the unreasonable one. It appears we a

Flew home for my sisters wedding. She went for cake testing in February for vegan red velvet cake. Approximately a week before the wedding, my sister tried to confirm details of the cake in which the employee/owner stated " they dont have a recipe for it and that they tried to educate my sister back in february that red velvet is made from beatle shells (they never told her this). The lack of communication and accountability from the owner is insane and issues are not addressed properly or professionally. There were many more issues to mention. My sister ended up cancelling 2 days before the wedding due to the awful communication and how she was spoken toand lack of confirmation on details. Was promised multiple times she would get her refund back, those days came and gone and still no refund. FINALLY, she got it. Save yourself the hassle and get your wedding cake from somewhere else, somewhere where you will be treated with respect and profesionnally.

After having to find a new caterer for my wedding, I was lucky enough to secure Black Honey and they really put together such a beautiful spread for us and our guests with such short notice. Everyone loved the food and the service. It was everything my husband and I wanted.
Jenn and her team went above and beyond for my wedding this past August 31st. Even being down a few team members, she and her team really knocked it out of the park. I really can't thank her enough. I highly recommend Black Honey for your catering and bakery needs. Everything will be beyond your expectation with them!
Jenn is easy to talk to and a great planner. If you're looking for a thorough overview of your catering service then Jenn is your girl! I was in such good hands and I am delighted to have worked with her.
Thank you so much!
(I will update my review with some photos once I have some available!)

If you are in the process of planning your wedding and are still looking for a bakery to have your cake made; stop wasting your time and go directly to Blackhoney.
My husband and I were planning a small wedding, and we came to see Jenn and the team at Blackhoney. We booked an appointment to come in and discuss our ideas for the cake, but we really had no idea what we were walking in to. My husband had said that he was only going to consider vanilla or chocolate; and I had left the cake flavours up to him so I had assumed that our wedding cake would be a standard vanilla.
We arrived and Jenn was immediately there to greet us, she was so welcoming and walked out with about 8 cupcakes, all with different flavours, filling, textures, and buttercreams. I want to re-iterate ... she came out will full size cupcakes, not little bites of a cake.
As we ate the cake, she explained each flavour, told us what they would pair with; and even took our dinner menu into consideration while we were discussing flavours. We were having a Summer wedding, and our colours were Black and White; so I had told her that I wanted something really simple without fondant. She was drawing our wedding cake while we were eating, and we finally settled on on a 3 tier, lemon cake, with raspberry compote and lemon curd filling. The lemon cupcake has the flavour that we wanted, but we were not sure how to raspberry was going to taste with it, so Jenn literally went and opened a brand new jar of the compote, so that we could taste it with the lemon cake.
Cut to a couple of months later, I had stayed in touch with Jenn because I was not sure about the design of the cake. I knew that I did not want any piping or designs on the cake; but was going to be adding fresh flowers and wanted smooth buttercream over all three tiers. Jenn was so quick to respond to all of my emails, and I had sent her a ton of pictures of what I was looking for.
As the wedding was approaching, I reached out to Jenn regarding wedding favours. I was originally thinking that I wanted chocolate of some sort, but was being quoted anywhere from $500-$600 from most chocolatiers. Jenn and I spoke and we decided on heart shaped sugar cookies, piped with mine and my husband's initials. For the sake of the business, I will not tell you how much I was quoted, but let me tell you .. it was significantly less than $600 for something that was much more personalized for our guests.
Jenn and her decorator, Zee brought the cake to the venue, and had it mostly decorated by the time I had arrived. When I tell you that it was the most beautiful cake I had ever seen. I had asked them to decorate it with baby's breath around the bottom of all three tiers. I expected three rings of baby's breath. That was exactly what I got, but Zee meticulously cut hundreds of little florets and decorated the middle tier to make it look like little flower polka dots.
Long story short, go see Jenn because our guests were amazed by our wedding cake.

This is the best bakery I have ever been to. The staff working are always OUTSTANDING. So friendly and provide amazing service, making you feel welcome and really make you want to go back.
Prices are so reasonable. I’m often surprised at how affordable my bill is, especially with how good the quality of the food and how amazing the service.
I have celiac and can only eat gluten free, and black honey bakery ALWAYS has a selection of items safe for me to eat. I often go to other places who quickly run out of their gluten free options so I always end up back at black honey. Any gluten free item that I’ve tried has always been very moist and a nice texture (something that is hard to come across).
15/10 would come here every single day.
To the owner: I hope you never change a thing about this place, it’s truly amazing!
Dietary restrictions: Gluten free options

I have always enjoyed the vibe at Black Honey Coffee Shop and Bakery. Whether you are grabbing coffee or treats to go or sitting down for a meeting with friends, family or colleagues - you will enjoy this special place. I love the cookies, cheesecake and brownies. Their drinks are delicious; hot or cold. I love the back patio area in the summer months. Recently my nephew got a cool cake with his favourite cartoon characters on it. He loved it! I have enjoyed the catering at events or weddings. Their roast beef and eggplant lasagna are so good with a side of salad! Great catering options and they are good with dietary restrictions too. Highly recommend.
