We were in town for a baseball tournament and stayed at the Water Tower Inn. For the price we paid per night, I expected a much better experience.
When we first checked into our room, I was immediately disappointed. There was a stained lampshade, spiderwebs in the corners, and a cracked mirror in the bathroom. I went back to the front desk and requested a different room, which they were happy to provide. The second room was cleaner, but the outdated 90s décor still left a lot to be desired, especially considering the nightly rate.
On top of that, two parents from our team had their cars broken into during our stay. When reported, the hotel simply told them to go through their own insurance.
If you're visiting the area, I’d recommend staying at one of the newer hotels. This place just isn’t worth the hassle.
Excellent accommodations in a convenient location.
Great place to stay, also the Casey's is spot on with the food, I will be returning here
We checked into the Water Tower Inn on Aug 12, 2025. The reason we chose to stay at this location was that we had been to this hotel previously on our last trip across Canada back in 2016 and assumed that it was still a nice hotel. Unfortunately we were wrong. I have read a number of negative reviews here about this hotel talking about everything from the 1990s look, to the torn carpets in the hallway, the poorly maintained pool, etc. but unfortunately no one mentioned the awful beds. I get all of these cosmetic concerns but come on people; why do you stay at a hotel? To get some rest as you travel, I thought? Anyhow, I don’t know about you but a good bed is everything. When I tried out the bed when we got into our room it felt more like lying in a hammock with limited support for my back so I knew I was in for a bad night's sleep. I headed back down to reception and asked staff if they could move us to a different room. We were advised that the hotel was full so shifting rooms was not possible. I described my concerns regarding the bed but basically they did not really seem to care. Unfortunately we were given no other alternatives. They could have offered a mattress pad, extra comforters or something to at least give me a chance to get a decent sleep but again, they really did not seem to care.
In the morning during check out I reiterated my point about the bed and its lack of support and again the staff did not seem interested in my feedback. They provided a meek apology with no offer of compensation or anything else.
To be clear, our overall experience at the hotel was relatively good, minus the bed. And as I stated above, I don’t select hotels for their fancy pool, restaurant, gym or anything else. I generally expect that a decent hotel will have an equally decent bed, that’s all I was really looking for but unfortunately that was not the case at the Water Tower Inn.
As I mentioned, we were travelling across Canada from July 26 to Aug 17 and during this trip we generally stayed at IHG hotels and had no major issues. Their beds by the way were generally fantastic! Unfortunately it appears that the new owners of the Water Tower Inn are not too concerned about their customers, which is a true pity. We have already let all of our friends, family and colleagues know to stay away from the Water Tower Inn whenever they visit Sault Ste. Marie. We strongly recommend choosing different accommodations; your back will thank me!
Old. Neglected. Dirty carpets. Way overpriced. Not the usual standard of Best Western. Staff were helpful. Wouldn't stay again. Wonderful location with onsite restaurant but many other hotels and restaurants in the area.
Great place to stay in SSM. It's on a fairly large footprint so there is a lot of parking, especially if you're travelling with a trailer. Indoor/outdoor hot tubs are nice, although half the times I've been here, the indoor hot tub has been closed. The pool and the sauna are decent as well. The food at the attached restaurant is decent and the breakfast is a good start to the day. Wish they would switch out the coffee though, it's not very good.
Check-in was quick and easy, and the beautiful foyer was a welcome sight. However, the room was quite expensive for a small space with only two double beds. An additional $30 was charged for a pet-friendly room, which I didn’t agree with unless your pet made a mess that required extra cleaning.
On the bright side, the room was clean and the beds were comfortable with fluffy pillows. Unfortunately, the indoor hot tub was closed for repairs, which wasn’t mentioned when we booked. The outdoor hot tub was open, however, and we enjoyed it along with the indoor pool and sauna. The pool area was a bit dated but clean.
One downside was that one of the two toilets in the women’s change room was missing a toilet seat.
The restaurant in the hotel was great and very convenient for those who didn’t plan on leaving the hotel during their stay, like us. There was also a cute little coffee shop and pub attached.
Overall, I’d say the hotel was nice enough, but it needed a few repairs and updates. The location is close to many amenities for those looking to partake, but the price tag wasn’t worth it for us.
Past reviewers were correct insofar as the hotel requiring an interior facelift.
Only 2 towels provided for 2 people.
Sleep was good so the mattress was comfortable.
Breakfast: steer clear of attached Kelsea’s- gluey floors, dank atmosphere and a sullen server to start the day. We exited.
Front desk accidentally overcharged & didn’t refund appropriately which can happen. The manager was not a good listener, not accountable and she did not apologize for the inconvenience. As a result 2 additional phone hours was wasted trying to recoup lost funds.
Service is great, they have a nice pool and hot tub. Rooms, hall decor is getting a bit dated could use a refresh.
Loved the pools, we stayed for 4 days and it was absolutely cozy, our toddler loved the pools. The entire staff was super friendly and welcoming. Thank you for amazing experience. Will definitely visit again.

I am a diamond member with best western and I exclusively use the water tower inn in Saut ste. Marie
Ever since i can remember, I am always reserved room 131. That is the room I like, everything about it what keeps me coming back to your hotel.
Today I go to check in even though I reserved room 131 and confirmed that I am booked in room 131, the front desk girl tries to put me in room 215. What is up with that? I reserved room 131
So then another gentleman comes to the front and tells me that I reserved 2 double beds. I said no, look at my reservation, he said that the reservation was changed.
I was not notified of a change, emailed, or called about a change.
I explained to him that I reserved 131, and he tried to put me on the 5th floor.
I explained no, I reserved 131, I want 131. I told him to cancel my reservation and I’ll go to the Quattro where they honor reservations, to which he said that he can put me in 119 for the same price.
That is unacceptable as this has 2 double beds…. I reserved 131
I am very disappointed in the lack of professionalism that is happing in this hotel, and I will not be booking with the Watertower Inn hotel anymore. Consider this my last visit.
Close to everywhere we needed. Room was clean. Bathtub was really nice. The view wasn’t bad either.
It was OK, pretty dated and needs bunch of maintenance. The wall leaked water when we showered. Some staff were great, others not so much. Honestly, probably wouldnt stay here again.
very normal hotel, clean rooms, staff is friendly, breakfast bar is a nice touch.
Kind staff and a great atmosphere. Good location in Sault Ste. Marie
