Nick and his staff are amazing. We’ve eaten here twice now. First time just me and the hubby. Second time with our grown kids. We have loved everything we’ve eaten.

Calling all big backs and food lovers alike.

This is not a drill.

Speaking as someone born and raised in the south, this is some of the best Cajun soul food I’ve ever had. The flavors hit, the beer selection is amazing!

Do yourself and your tastebuds a favor and head over to The Royal for something delicious.

(The salad I had was either the Suncoast or Sunshine, and it had white figs, blue cheese, toasted almonds, and I added blackened shrimp. This was incredible and I will order it again. 10/10.

The cornmeal battered and then fried deviled eggs were so delicious I haven’t been able to quit thinking about them. 10/10 ?#bigback)

I didn’t get a picture before I ate it all, but I had a slice of the banana pudding pie, and dear lord y’all ?‍?. 10/10)

This is not an add, just a bigback sharing a solid spot. — at The Royal Cafe.

If you are looking for Nick's Soul Food, then you've found his new place. The well-known food truck proprietor who used to park at Two Towns near Corvallis, has moved his Southern fare into this Albany bar.

**Photos aren't great because we started digging in before I thought to take them!**

I'm a 20-year transplant from Nick's hometown in Alabama and his food is as close you will get to real Southern soul food anywhere nearby. This is not the upscaled type of Southern restaurant you'll find in PDX. Nope, this is much more like the real thing.

We've had two meals here so far. First time was take out and we got a po' boy. If you are looking for authentic po' boy sandwiches then go for the soft-shell crab one. It's like a Southern version of a sushi spider roll. Nick makes his with real Maryland blue crab, not the smaller Asian crabs. It's perfectly breaded and seasoned on an authentic soft roll.

The second time we stopped by on a Wednesday night. Our party of four ordered oyster shooters (yum!), deep fried deviled eggs (decadent), shrimp and grits (real unpeeling shrimp), red beans and rice, a fried catfish po' boy, and the daily special deep fried pork chop plate with braised collard greens and cheese grits.

The high points were definitely the oysters, catfish and (surprisingly) the pork chop, which was sweet, cooked perfectly and an unexpected treat.

Down the road it would be great to see more Southern classics, especially for sides. I'm thinking cornbread, butter beans, fried okra, black-eyed peas, squash casserole, etc. Since we visited only a few days after they opened I suspect they were still getting used to the new kitchen and space.

I gave the atmosphere a knock because the large windows made the place pretty chilly on the cold, stormy night when we visited. But we're looking forward to coming back as this new restaurant continues its transformation from local bar to family-friendly, unpretentious eatery. Nick's friendly service is an added bonus.

Parking: Parking in front of the building, plenty of spaces for a normal night.

Who's ready for something different. Once you step into Royal, you feel like you're in the atmosphere of Cheers! Always laughter, incredible service, divine dishes. Some guy named Nick makes the food. Pretty cool dude. Him amd his staff are very hospitable and easy on the eyes?. Check Nicks Soulfood on Instagram for a rotating menu with flavors from the south.

Best food I've had in Oregon, and I've lived here most my life. Menu is unique and has a nice range of savory to choose from. Incredibly friendly staff, worth their weight in gold.

It started out looking like we made a wrong choice, they didn't have or were out of things we wanted. The cooks and staff made sure they did the best they could. Turned out to be a really nice experience and the food was really good! Hidden gem.

Order the chicken biryani, it was fantastic! Their chicken curry was great as well. The staff was very nice and service was good. I had only just heard of this place 3 days ago, but I know I'll be going back soon!

1st time we ate there the onion rings were burnt and burger was very rare... which I don't mind much but it just wasn't that great.... 2nd time it took 20 minutes to take our order and 30 minutes to make it (2 burgers and fish&chips) with only 10 people in the place. Once we got the food my order was wrong (they made that right which I commend) but then the tator tots were waaay overdone and the burger was overdone.

The people were nice and friendly and im sure its a great place to hang out and just get drinks but the food is lacking
