Unfortunately I think the barista was having a bad morning she didn't understand exactly what we wanted and we had to put up a bit of an argument to get things straightened out at the end.

There's a mask mandate in place. Why was I dodging a mom and son team wandering the store without masks and that were giving no shits about social distancing yesterday? Why were they let in? Why were they allowed to check out without a fuss?

....to answer the question, Safeway (Clackamas) could improve by actually paying attention to their own regulations regarding sanity and social distancing. They are letting too many people into the store, the people are ignoring the aisle directions (and the store is making no effort to encourage compliance - other local stores are making constant announcements, and have employees walking around...) instead of sanitizing the checkout station (belts..) after every customer they are doing it after every 3 or 4 and they are not sanitizing the keypad... the atmosphere in my opinion is that they are barely going through the motions and don't really care.
Safeway could take a lesson from New Seasons on how to operate safely and instill some level of comfort and confidence in their customers. I have no idea about any other Safeway stores and base this on my last few trips there over the last two weeks.
I invite Safeway to actually respond to this.
