I was hungry after waiting at DMV for a long time. I’ve grown up in a deli for decades , have a minimal standard expectation and I was hoping for a decent sandwich. The tuna was not available so I ordered pastrami.First of all the bread roll was sticking to the wrapper, and it was the worst chewiest roll I’ve ever had, , I had a hard time biting into it! To me it would have been more decent if it was toasted. There wasn’t much meat on the sandwich either and I think it was pricey for what it was.I did complain to the staff, only because I was the only one there, and the young man was more understanding than the young lady. She just said sorry , I was complaining to the wrong person, and disappeared. The young man and I had a nice conversation and he did offer to make another sandwich which I declined, I just said I would contact the company to give my opinion and experience. I liked that it is a female owned establishment, as my mom was the owner operator in our deli and wholesale business. But I was truly disappointed.

I went in to order a sub and the staff refused to make a turkey and roast beef sub. They said I could only order it with ham and bacon, which I did not want. So I left and won’t go back because they weren’t helpful. Staff needs to be friendlier.

I got a veggie sub, lettuce was brown and the tomatos were soggy, in the avocado was black. Unedible

Home of what is possibly the world's chewiest bread, this sandwich joint offers processed meat sliced in store with seemingly fresh ingredients and a clean store. It's not a destination location, but if you find yourself waiting at the DMV which is located next door, then this will do in a pinch. They ask you for a tip before making your sandwich so set your expectations accordingly.

It was good. The bread had a nice chew, the meat was well-portioned, and a pleasant overall experience. The lettuce was a little old, but fine.

I leave two stars because the ingredients were good...when they weren't doing their absolute best to put as little on the sandwich as possible. Oh! Except the shredded lettuce, of course, to make the sandwich look BIG. But make no mistake, the owner has CLEARLY instructed employees to SKIMP. For instance, I ordered the Veggie Sub, with fresh Avocado. I was ASTONISHED watching the young woman scrape as little off the half-avocado as possible, literally that thin layer that oxidizes. She spread it like a VERY thin layer of mustard. I asked her, "Is that ALL the avocado you put on there?!?". She mumbled something that sounded like, "Uh, there's more." But there wasn't. She started rolling sandwich in paper and I said, "So that IS all the avocado!" She seemed to slightly panic, eyes wide, "Do you want more? Do you want more?". I said, "No.". I already made up my mind... I have NO doubt she knew the portion was RIDICULOUS, anticipated a complaint...because she was instructed to skimp. And the pathetic amount of avocado she did spread didn't even cover the full length of the bread! Same with other ingredients. PAPER-thin cross-sections of green pepper, spaced to slightly overlap (Presentation!), but so that only a few slices would cover the length of the bread. Same with other ingredients... Again, it is CRYSTAL clear the owner is telling employees to put as little on sandwich as they can get away with, and only give more if they complain, which most people won't do because sandwich is packaged when they pick up or because they didn't fully watch sandwich being made, or they're just uncomfortable saying something. It was comical watching her aggressively and energetically heap a MOUND of shredded lettuce on the sandwich. I had to tell her to "Stop!" because it was way too much lettuce, and it was thoroughly transparent what she was doing, i.e., trying to make the sandwich look substantial when all it was was LITERALLY a few ounces of vegetables, a slice of cheese, and a BIG bread roll...for 11-12 bucks. What..a..joke. Also, the way this young girl was dressed, as well as the guy there who I think was the manager, were dressed HORRIBLY. She wore what looked like an old t-shirt for a guy 4 times her size, where the neck was WILDLY stretched out. I mean, it just looked horrible. The manager's clothes made him look like a guy who was OFF work, out of the public eye. WILDLY unprofessional appearance. I couldn't help think, "If they don't give a damn about their appearance, what ELSE don't they care about?!?". Btw, the sullen manager was standing right there when I mentioned the avocado to the sandwich maker, and said nothing. He clearly didn't give a s**** Again, the ingredients were good, what little were there. But unless management reaches out here with an apology, not only will I never go back, but I will tell everyone in the neighborhood to just go over to Flying Pie. They make great sandwiches, are generous with portions, and the employees over there are famously cheery, have a casual but more professional appearance. If management DOES apologize, and offers me a REAL sandwich, I will publicize that as well. I'm not unfair, but I sure am pissed when businesses try to make suckers of consumers...

It's a good spot it can be a hit or miss on who's making your sandwich and who's listening to you sometimes they're a little overwhelmed but it seems like they need a little more staff

I have been to Monkey's Subs in Lake O many times. The sandwiches are great and they will customize to your taste. The owners are friendly and helpful. The place is always clean and neat as a pin. I often have the turkey, bacon and avocado - delicious!

The workers who make the food do not wear masks. Gross. Will not return until masks are worn. They should be as mandatory as gloves for food prep now. Definitely kills the appetite to think of people breathing all over the food they make for you."According to the 2021 San Diego Food Handler’s Guide to Food Safety, food handlers are the number one cause of the spread of germs to food."

So glad I stopped in!I’m from the east Coast and having been looking for a place to get a pastrami sandwich like this for 6 years!! So good, thank you!

Service was horrible. They said they couldn't make a custom sandwich lol. Why not you lazy turds? Are all sandwiches premade? All we wanted was a ham and bacon with pepper jack. Instead had to get something on the menu that you called "close" to what we wanted. And when we wanted to change the cheese on the sandwich you charged us $1.50 TO CHANGE THE CHEESE. This place is an absolute joke.

Best sub sandwich in town! I've been here more than 5 times and have never had a bad meal. They cut the meat fresh to order, and the bread is top notch. Friendly staff, plus the homemade potato salad is the bomb. I'd go here any day of the week (The Barrel of Monkey's is my favorite)

A cute little place with good sandwiches! Be sure to get the monkey sauce. Sub-wise it is kind of on the same tier as Jimmy Johns & the like, but for me the monkey sauce pushed it that extra bit further. Staff always super welcoming and nice.
