I've been shopping at Safeway (in Springfield) and Albertson's (in Eugene), on and off, for roughly 15 years. Recently, I'm been shopping there for three years regularly (but not my main shopping, which I did at Walmart and Winco), until I discovered Fred Meyer has the best prices and wider options than anyone else...even Walmart and Winco. Went last night around 8:30pm. There was one checker!! I stood in a line with 11 people in front of me. Apparently there was no extra staff working that night to open another checker, and the checker said something like that's just the way they get staffed, it isn't budgeted to have more help. This is how you lose good employees and customer's.
If you insist on understaffing your store, maybe invest in a self check or two. I will not be returning to this location.
