It was so hot today I could only get as far as the Barnes and Noble five blocks from my house, where I stopped in for my second coffee of the day. I skimmed a few pages of WOMEN HAVE BETTER SEX UNDER SOCIALISM before approaching the counter. They've resurrected the plexiglass screen. The barista peers out at me from behind a black and green Eagles mask and the plexiglass. She greets me warmly. She asks my name though I am the only customer around. (Late August, students still back at home.) She mishears me. I don't correct her. I tell her it makes no difference and we have a laugh. The tip jar contains a handful of loose change, a beggar's cup. Baristas here start at $10/hr. I know this because the last time I was here I overheard the manager answering the questions of a jobseeker who was ahead of me in line. (They actually make $2/hr more than the booksellers.) I made sure to leave a tip that day. As I'm waiting for another friendly cog in the great Starbucks Corporate Wheel to construct my beverage (cold brew, black, light ice), I hear the manager lecturing the new hire with the warm eyes. "So we gotta work on our Customer Connection Score this month. We gotta get it up. We're at an 11." "11 out of...?" the new hire asks. "11 out of 100. It's not as bad as it sounds, our other scores our really high, drink satisfaction and speed are really high, but according to Starbucks we're not going above and beyond with our Customer Connection. We're not getting to know our customers the Starbucks way. You know, asking their names and learning their orders. So we gotta work on our Customer Connection Score. If we can exceed the regional standard they'll give us free Starbucks t-shirts and a pizza party..." I don't linger in the store. The Delta variant is on the move and not everyone has gotten the memo yet. On the way out I catch the barista's eye. She's peering out at me from behind the plexiglass, the mask, the customer service survey that binds her to the name on my cup, she's peering out beyond her role, her wage, her boss, her boss's boss, her boss's boss's boss. She's smiling, I think. I want to wave, would that be weird? I feel like we connected.

The two young women who waited on me were friendly, professional, and efficient. But, an older female there was cleaning out her ear with her bare pinky while standing behind the counter. If she had been my server, I would have cancelled the order. I won't return.

I wanted to try the almond milk something. It was alright. I'm not an almond milk drinker. It's not a coffee that I will order again.
Servers were excellent and helpful with recommendations for my daughter!

This is a perfectly nice Starbucks, located inside Target. It occasionally has a super long line because the store is busy, or because there's only one barista working and they have to jump back and forth between cashier and coffee. You can get just about anything, and they even include clip-on cart cupholders if you're ordering on your way in.

Nothing out of the ordinary here. I got a dark roast and it was only available as a pour over. Pretty typical from what I see from Starbucks locations within another business (this one is inside Target). Whole milk also wasn't available at the station - had to ask for it. But my dark roast tasted fine as expected and kept me energized throughout my Target run.
