A waste of a great location. The most moody and unhelpful 'waiter' who didn't know the menu, was rude when I asked for my cold burger to be re-heated and then avoided eye-contact when we wanted the bill. When I complained to the Maitre D' she just laughed and thought he was having a bad day! Avoid.
We found this pearl close the most western part Europe and the memory will stay with us forever. Very interesting atmosphere, perfect view over the Atlantic sea. Dishes were tasty. We recommend this restaurant for the atmosphere, food and view.
The service was very poor, and I have been going to Moinho for many years. It has always had its ups and downs, but this time it exceeded all limits. When I arrived, there was a rope blocking the entrance. It was very cold and windy, and the interior space had plenty of room. The staff looked at me but didn't even bother to say good evening. I ordered a long coffee in a large cup (Abatanado), and they brought me a small black coffee. I complained, and the person who served me argued and said that the Abatanado they served there was just a regular coffee with hot water added. I took the opportunity to complain about everything to the girl who served me. The rope at the entrance, having to stay in the cold, signs explicitly saying not to destroy the garden and to respect the space. The girl contested everything and bid me good evening with a forced smile. It's a beautiful place, and only civilized people go there. I have never seen anyone in that place disrespecting others. I felt like I was in an overpriced dive. Senti-me numa tasca cara.
Except for the very nice view, the experience is a big disappointment First they create a ‘fake queue’ to give the impression that the place is in super high demand (which is not the case as many tables were available when we ‘were allowed to get in’ after 30’ of useless waiting time) Second you have to standup in narrow staircases while waiting (no seats, no bar, no nothing) Third when you get in, they allow many people at the same time (remember, there are plenty of empty tables) and give tables at random, meaning you might the worst table even you queued 20’ more than others Fourth they do not operate ‘first come first serve’ meaning you might wait for ages before being asked for your order Fifth the food is expensive but quantity is minimal and quality is basic Sixth if you need anything extra the whole endless process starts all over again, meaning you finished your meal before getting what you needed while eating Last the service team is not caring about your experience… which sums it all up
We were taken to this restaurant by friends. The location is great, on the road returning to Cascais from Cabo da Rocha. The location and view are amazing and warrant a 5 star rating. The service and the food, at least for our visit, was not up to our expectations. The service was inconsistent, the food was OK, but nothing special. We ordered at least one item from the menu that never came. We reminded them we ordered it and told them they could cancel it. They said "oh, we are out of that anyway, which is why it did not come". Hmmmm. Didn't think to tell us? The place is pet friendly. By the time we were wrapping up, we had 4 dogs sitting next to our table or under the table. One was from the restaurant, one from the "neighbor" and the other two I am not sure. We are not big complainers and our group rolled with everything, no problem. Just head in with lower expectations and us and you will probably enjoy it more.
love this place. i’ve gone several times, it never disappoints. great drinks, great food, such a lovely ambiance, and super nice staff. definitely a must go when in sintra
We have order three starters and 6 simple hamburgers. They bring 6 hamburgers and only 1 starter 90 minutes after we’ve ordered. They brought the second starter after we finished of our hamburgers. They totally forget the third starter choise of ours. I will never come back again.
Everyone has dreams, but not everyone reaches them. For a brief period of time on the 4th of January 2023 I reached mine and had a perfect meal at Moinho Dom Quixote. Let me tell you the story… My girlfriend and I arrived early in the evening - just as the sun was dipping low over the horizon and casting a golden glow over the back garden. It was stunning and filled with many plants, paths and tables spread out across several levels. At first we couldn’t decide where to sit - next to the small fish pond or on the veranda overlooking the view below? Shortly after entering we were met by an attentive waiter who was happy to offer us a space even though we didn’t have a reservation and despite us choosing to eventually sit indoors was still very kind and accommodating. As we entered I realised the inside looked almost like someone’s home with many trinkets from all over the world attached to the walls. Boat anchors, turtles and African wood carvings adorned the walls and a large model of a swordfish hung from the ceiling. There was a wagon wheel embedded in the interior wall that acted as a window to another dining area and colourful paintings affixed to the ceiling. A small Dog slept on a chair at a table next to us whilst another, called Luca, padded around - occasionally letting off a solitary bark at nothing in particular. World & portugese music washed over us and gave the place a warm and inviting vibe. Finally a chandelier of large twigs an colourful and bulbous glass balls suspended in knotted rope finished the rustic tone of the place. My girlfriend remarked that it was really thoughtfully decorated. We sat down and looked at the menu which on its very first page tells you the story of the restaurant. Purchased in 1983, it was found in a dilapidated state and took 6 years of planning, planting, and renovation for the owner to see his dreams come to fruition and opened in the summer of ‘89. The menu now includes a range of tapas as well as some other traditional dishes - there is something here for everyone. We ordered starters and a main - Soup and sourdough bread with an olive spread delivered a tasty hit and whetted our appetite for our mains: a Texi-Burger, and chickpea burger. They gave generous servings and the chef didn’t spare additional ingredients. Unlike most other restaurants, they make their own sauces here - we tucked into homemade mayo, tomato and spicy sauce. In addition to the patty, my burger came loaded with dressed salad, onion, and healthy portions of guacamole that slopped out the side onto the plate as I tucked in. Alongside this, we were served ‘rustic potatoes’ topped with chives in a black skillet. It was all delicious. Taking a breather from inhaling my food, I looked around the room and saw a couple entering who had spotted Luca the labrador asleep on the floor, just like a car parked ostentatiously in the middle of an intersection - he was completely oblivious to the traffic all around it in the form of waiters and people passing around his periphery. All this is to say, Moinho Dom Quixote delivers in every aspect - from the incredible food and presentation, to the beautiful surrounds, friendly staff, and impossible-to-beat atmosphere. If you want rustic style food cooked to perfection, this is the place to come.
We had a good family experience here. The seating area is random and casual with a small terrace and a number of seating "pods" dotted amongst the garden area. The view is lovely and it feels quite sheltered. The menu is tapas style with a good selection. We were four adults and two very young children but there was something for everyone on the menu. The food was tasty and well cooked. Prices were reasonable as was the service.
The chorizo is scrummy as are the rustic potatoes. The €24 (most expensive I thing - organic) is fab! Setting for sunsets is fab. Great views anyway. Nice staff too.

Extremely disappointed. Have visited most summers over the last 10+ years. Always enjoyed the location and views. New management perhaps - but whole experience this time was terrible. Queuing for a table. Once seated we were forgotten about. Had to ask for someone to take order. It was a good (hunger inducing) 45mins later that the drinks finally arrived. From the 5 meals ordered, only 4 arrived. Were told the missing meal would be right with us. It didn’t appear. Another waiter then told us it had been missed from the order and that the kitchen was preparing it now. It still hadn’t arrived by the time all other meals (of unexciting standard) at the table had been finished. All felt very disorganised and frustrating. We were given complementary guacamole and nachos by way of apology, but sadly not the lunch for one of our party that they’d wanted. (2hrs we were there!) Witnessed several other people/tables waiting for long periods, complaining and chasing orders. Will not be returning. Will not be recommending.
Please save your money! The view is beautiful and the restaurant is decorated nicely, but we spent €75 on drinks and nibbles... After the first round of €9 cocktails, which left us wondering if we'd been given the virgin versions, we stuck to bottled beer/cider because it could at least be trusted. The nachos and guacamole were nice, but generally the food is overpriced by Portugal standards. You are paying for a view that you can get from many other fish restaurants along the coast, with better food and prices (eg, Adraga). The most bizarre part of our meal was that despite having multiple WiFi networks (see pic), they literally refused us access even when we explained we needed to call an Uber to travel back to Sintra. In the end a waitress took pity on us and called us a cab but it cost us 2X the price!!
I had to come to Portugal to have my best ever hamburger! A stunning view and a place that has a special touch everywhere you look around you. Can't be missed.
This experience will likely become my most indelible memory of Portugal. Sitting on the outdoor patio on a cliff overlooking the crashing waves of the Atlantic, you’ll be treated to delicious food, especially the tapas. We elected to order five dishes, and while the pulled pork wasn't as dazzling as we’d hoped, the Brazilian cheesy bread, pork croquetes, and codfish fritters spritzed with lemon were everything we wanted them to be! The cat hanging out in the parking lot is literally the most affectionate animal in the world. I love the fact that it actually appears in the photographs of this restaurant! The food is a little above four stars, but the view gets five stars for sure!
