Very unique, local experience. We ordered upstairs and watched while our beef was cut and put on the skewer, grabbed some bread and wine and walked around to the dining area downstairs. You cook the meat yourself, eat with your fingers, and drink wine from a paper cup. It is not fancy, but I am not complaining! The food was great, and it was a great experience.

We passed this fascinating traditional BBQ place on the way to another restaurant, and were too shy to actually eat there. What a mistake! We were later told, by a local tour guide, that this was a well known place and there weren't many of them left in Madeira. I am sure we could have been helped to manage this intersting BBQ ritual: Choose the meat at the front in the butchers, who will apply herbs and spices and skewer them for you; then it is out the front door and round the corner to the eating area, where you BBQ the skewers over the cinders of the fire wood, and then find space at a table with the metal hooks to suspend the skewers. Grab some beer and wine at the bar, and then slide the chunks of meat off the skewer and eat with bread, standing up beside the table. Looked marvellous! And wished we had been more brave and tried it ourselves - certainly will not miss out next time! Certainly good for a family outing, although only open form Thursday to Saturday, 12-22.00. Popular with the locals, too!

What a unique and wonderful experience! Get your meat fresh from the local butcher and watch as they season and skewer it. Then walk your skewer down the street to the restaurant in the back and grill your espetada on an open fire. Once it is finished you grab the meat off of the skewer using the bread and eat! No utensils, plates or seats! Delicious and affordable!
