“Wonderful late dinner after an afternoon hike. We were welcomed immediately and started with amazing perfect limpets. Our fish - cod, falling apart in a bed of olive oil and potatoes -and grouper, fresh off the grill with crisped salted skin, were cooked so perfectly. Our wine and lime poncha delicious and for dessert we shared both the passion fruit cheesecake (which was more like a sweet custard) and an almond pie.“

“We were advised at A Traineira (Caniço de Baixo) and we are completely satisfied.
The bolo do caco at the beginning fresh from the wood-fired oven together with our traditional Poncha was divine. Then the picanha accompanied by 2 risottos (onion, beans and chorizo) was the highlight. We ordered it rare to our liking and it arrived that way. Then, at the end, the mousse clearly made in-house with hazelnuts on top was perfect, not to mention the always attentive service. I highly recommend it!“

Greeted by Suzanna with a great smile, in French, she brought us on a large platter 4 superb fresh whole fish from which to choose the one we were going to taste. Deliciously grilled, soft, we feasted on a superb sea bream, a hearty and tasty plate. So, either we don't have a sea view, the style is more tavern, with paneling but we delight our taste buds for a more than fair price, proof that the address is good, the queue, we don't don't reserve!! We had a great bowl, a free table straight away!! Local atmosphere, a little noisy but lively. All the staff are super efficient in serving and satisfying every guest. “Stopped here to grab some breakfast and a coffee. We had ham and cheese, chicken sandwich, sausage roll and fresh orange juice. The orange juice is amazing…you can’t ask for better. Americano was also pretty great. Lovely atmosphere as well.“

Het voorste deel van de zaak (de bar) kan misschien wat afschrikken, maar achter deze bar ligt een fijne zaak met een zeer aangenaam terras verstopt. “Prepare yourself for the unfortunately usual poor acoustics of the place. But the friendliness of the staff, the food and the wine offer overcome this inconvenience. We start with an alheira, samosa and a suckling pig patty, we move on to the regional chopped, the only drawback of which is the already chronic lack of flavor and texture of the potatoes that currently proliferate in the supply circuits. Despite being homemade, it was soft and without much flavor. The wine choice fell on a Medusa Red from 2022, which deserves a score of 9 out of 10.

“Delicious food for good price. Nice waiter, we found out that he doesn’t like coral beer :D he jokes that they make if from river water because the brewery is near the river. In the restaurant have portuguese beer which is fuller and bitter than coral. It depends on everyone’s tastes but we liked it very much. Madeiran Espada with banana and passion fruit was especially delicious.

P.S. for the waiter: You should try Czech beer I think you would like it.“

Besides the ambiance and great service, there is also freshly prepared delicious food for a fair price. I had a delicious tomato soup and a huge tuna steak with a pan full of salad. “It's one of those places that I discovered by luck and a local recommendation, simply incredible, everything I could ask for to end my visit to the island of Madeira, good food, made with care and well served for Portuguese people.

From the more than good tuna, to the incredible corn, loose rice, and the incredible friendliness of those who work there.

If I stayed longer, I would have to go through the entire menu on different days.

“A quaint restaurant, an honest menu for meat eaters, but that's what is mainly eaten in Madeira. I think it's very inexpensive and I think wine connoisseurs will also feel very comfortable here. Boss (I think) very open and attentive.“

“Portela À Vista Restaurant is fantastic and very easy to find. I have never been to a more beautiful restaurant with such a fantastic view of nature.

On Saturdays, we knew in advance that there would be a lot of people waiting for a table, so we called the day before to make a reservation. When we arrived at Portela Restaurant, we only had to wait for a few minutes.

We asked the waitress for the traditional food, espetada with French fries, and the food was excellent. The prices for food and drinks were very reasonable considering the quality offered.

However, we were not pleased with the service. The waitress was occasionally inconvenient and often seemed upset about things that customers shouldn’t need to be concerned with.“

“Eating vegan is difficult in Santa Cruz and Madiera in general. It's meat and dairy heavy, but Recanto da Pitada do a vaguely named Vegan Tapas. It was surprisingly tasty, 8 pieces of pizza-like tapas with a vegan sausage and chickpea patty, topped with vegan cheese.

I'd definitely recommend this if you are after a vegan/plant-based meal in Santa Cruz. It was a large serving despite being in the starter section.

The mixed dessert plate we ordered was great - you should share it. The wine list offers a very large selection. Ambience is quaint.
