Simple food cooked well, small portions but the price reflects that. We had pork chop which came with 2 slices of orange so remember to order any salad, fries or rice separately. Food was good quality. We also had Chilli con carne , this was nice although small for my husband who had 1/2 my rice too ! With two glasses of wine for 27 euro. Would eat there again
We first visited Snack Bar Mare four years ago and were very keen to return on our next trip to Madeira. We were not disappointed. The owners are very welcoming, the atmosphere is excellent, and the Friday night with violinist is truly, once again, a highlight of our stay.
I went to this lovely cafe/restaurant every day of my holiday, the food was sublime, served by the lovelylist people,so much choice on the menu, all of it tasty and good. The prices are unbelievable,I would have paid double. The main event is a friday night when a violinist plays for you,all sorts of music from pop to classical, such a talent.Thank You For Making My Holiday so Happy,Alan xx
This place is affordable and very, very, very good, best octopus we have eaten in a long time, very good poncha as well, it packs a punch!!
Alex and Inaa lovely son and mom run a fantastic cafe bar. Food though not extensive is excellent and great value for money. I don't do fish but I tried on 3 different occasions (only off my partners plate) but it was delicious.Pepper steak to die for and vanilla ice cream divine. Friday evenings Andre and his violin superb definitely worth booking for this evening. ALEX WE WILL BE BACK
This place is so low key and off the radar you would pass it without giving it look. This is where you miss out, the snack bar mare is a hidden gem where is food is simple, tasty and cooked with honesty. The restaurant is fronted by a lovely bloke called Alex whose attention to detail and supplier of knowledge is second to none, he also offers a maitre de type of service which would not be out of place in a high end establishment. The food on offer is traditional to the area with added bonus of extra dishes from other areas, service is prompt and they let you just get on with enjoying the vibe without rush. We ate at the mare 4 times and each dish was well cooked and extremely flavoursome, your eating experience is intermixed with various conversational snippets from Alex which makes the overall meal most fun and enjoyable. On our last day we opted for lunch as we were catching our flight at 6 pm, once again the food we ordered was excellent and well cooked but after chatting with Alex it becomes more apparent that they don’t just own and run a restaurant but also have a collection of rentable apartments within a few minutes walk. This information was not forced upon us but was offered in a relaxed and informative manner. We offered to stay in touch with Alex as we are looking for a “bolt hole” to fill a few weeks in 2024 and their apartments fitted what we are looking for. We were also told that every Friday night they have a entertainment night with a fixed menu which sounded great and hopefully next year we will sample the delights of this event. All I will say is this, if you are in the area and fancy some well priced yet excellent food then the snack bar mare will not disappoint.
An unpretentious, straightforward restaurant, but way better than its 'Snack Bar' name suggests. Really friendly, informative proprietor, a good range on the menu with generous portions and very good prices. The best garlic bread in Caniço, and and excellent parrotfish with a generous glass of wine. The Russian-style ravioli even came with a small glass of vodka! A really enjoyable meal overlooking the sea – excellent.
Everything great! I recommend!

Came back to Maderia and had to come back here,as amazing food and drinks. Alex and mum Inna are just so welcoming.. Friday nights entertainment not to be missed either.
This is the best place to eat, especially on a Friday night when they have a "live" violinest who is wonderful. The atmosphere is great. You will need to book as it is a small restaurant and very popular. The menu is limited but good and the food is wonderful. The owners are very welcoming and the staff are efficient and helpful. We came here twice during our holiday and will be returning next year . It is not open on Saturdays.
