We ate at Mata Bicho 3 times during our 4 days in Leiria because the food was delicious, especially the garlic prawns, and the service was excellent. Our waitress was happy to explain the strange name, which dates from colonial times and which translates literally as "kill the bug".
A lovely restaurant in a lovely location with plenty of outdoor seating and friendly, attentive staff. The attentive staff offered us some basic local snacks, which we followed by the padrons, a pasta dish, steak, salad, and some fruit as a desert. All we had was nicely cooked, albeit rather unimaginative. An extensive wine list, which the staff was very happy to help with. The end result of which was a very enjoyable bottle of Douro red. Not the best meal I’ve ever had, but no regrets having our Sunday dinner here.
Recommended by the hotel and it was a good choice. At a nice square in the centre, cosy, friendly staff and a good choice of nice meals
Mata bicho is one of those restaurants that you always feel confident on a great experience. And again there was no disappointment. Great food, attention to detail, kindness to the child, the works. The food is always high quality, no matter what you chose.
I needed a "quick bite" rather than a full meal. I headed to Mata Bicho because they serve petiscos. I had a simple meal of prawns in a spicy garlic sauce, with bread and salad. The prawns were delicious (but only after I had cleaned them - deveined them - something which the chef should have done). The food came fast, as I required, and met my needs, despite the serving person being rather surly and unfriendly. However, the experience was spoiled by the restaurant adding a coffee to the bill which I had neither ordered nor consumed. It was only €0.80 for the coffee, but nevertheless, this shouldn't have happened and I urge others to check their bills. In short, if you are happy with basic Portuguese cuisine, this restaurant is a decent choice in a lovely square.
Not knowing the area, we arrived searching for lunch on a Sunday. There was a huge queue to this restaurant, so we decided that if it was that popular it would be worth the wait. And so we waited, and waited, and waited some more until there was only a group of 4 people ahead of us. I add here that apart from coming to get the people standing in front the door, none of the staff attempted to determine who was first or how big the parties were. Somehow the people in front of us managed to obtain a menu and a few minutes later the waiter approached to take their order saying that this way he would place the order with the kitchen and in the meantime he would get the table ready. We then moved forward and again waited and waited. Another couple arrived and walked into the restaurant to wait too. The waiter then asked who was first. We said we were do he told us there were two tables becoming available one inside and another outside. We initially told him that either would be fine, but a minute later I walked to the waiter to tell him I had changed my mind and would prefer inside. The waiter told us he could not give us the table inside as the other couple had already placed their order. We hadn’t even been offered a menu! Let alone have the chance to place our order! After nearly 40 minutes waiting we ended up leaving without eating. The whole service observed while we waited was awful, very unorganized and with very little attention to waiting customers. As we waited many other people approach and stood in the queue, most of them going away after having had no word from the waiters. Inefficiency a and very poor customer service was the final opinion, which was actually a shame seeing that the food we saw coming to the table looked very good.
