We planned to go to another restaurant, but it was closed for holidays. Even though Romana only had a 3.9 rating, we gave it the benefit of the doubt, because they supposedly had new management. It even has a cozy atmosphere, especially on the first floor. It is well located… But the service was very bad. I apologize for being blunt, but it may be possible to improve the service with constructive criticism. The mixed bread (it wasn't even cornbread) that they served at the beginning was hard, as if it had been two days old. We didn't feel like meat, so we went for fish. The salmon was dry, had a strange flavor, and didn't seem fresh. More than half remained on the table. The sea bream were somewhat tough, but they were eaten. The Romana cod was the worst of all: I've had the cod be under-baked or fried, salty... Now being cold was something new!!! And when I say cold, I don't mean lukewarm, but cold. The outer layers were hot, but as I was eating inside I realized that it would be salty (and it was immense!!! I spent a night forgetting it). But the strange thing is that the salty food was secondary because, inside, it was really cold!! I assume it was already prepared, they put it in oil and turned it over, and put it on the plate with fries (it was tasty). I really found it strange that Minho style cod appeared on the table in less than 15 minutes. The meat served on the tables next to it was certainly hot. The staff were polite and helpful. I didn't bother to mention the heated food, because I think that's the standard. But not for me. With this type of service, I'm sorry, but I won't be back.

This wasn't a planned visit but we were delighted that we did! We enjoyed our meal and the portion sizes were plentiful. We can't fault the staff and the service. After our meal we were kindly advised to settle the bill at the bar located downstairs from the restaurant. The new owner and manager Antonio is wonderful. Professional, friendly and such an excellent host! For those of you visiting Chaves or indeed if you are a local, please consider The Romana, you won't be disappointed!
