The restaurant is easy to find, being on a street corner opposite the Municipal Park in the centre of town. We decided to have an early dinner and were there just after the restaurant opened. Most tables had reserved signs on them. We were lucky in that we got a table without having had made a reservation. We soon understood why. Starters of mussels and vegetable soup were both delicious. My partner had an excellent lemon sole (Linguado) and I had octopus (Polvo a Largareiro) which is probably the best I've had anywhere. Both were served with boiled potato and lots of greens. As usual with Madeiran restaurants, the servings were extremely generous. We shared a decent bottle of white Douro and finished with a light dessert called Molotov, mainly fluffed egg white with a drizzle of caramel sauce and a dusting of cinnamon. The quality of everything was exceptional. By the time we had been served our desserts, the restaurant was not only full, but there was a line of around twenty people outside waiting for tables. Wine, water, coffee and three courses came to just over 100 euro for two which is very reasonable for this quality of fare. Service is friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. With a reputation like this restaurant has, I'd say it's essential to book. I'd go back in a heartbeat.
Excellent food, good a professional service despite the place was full! Keep in mind, make a reservation. If you like octopus you’re at the right place fabulous. Excellent price quality relationship!!
For many years we have visited Dos Combatentes but this year was our first visit for several years but once again we were not disappointed. We had not booked which is a bad idea. You end up being squeezed in to a table at the door which can be challenging. The restaurant is exceptionally popular with visitors from all over the world and understandably so. We settled for traditional Madeiran meat and fish dishes and as always we enjoyed our selections immensely. One of the consistently special restaurants in Funchal.
If I had one word for this place it would be phenomenal. The food is great and everyone had something different and they were all fabulous. I would highly recommend the prawns and mussels to start and the meat kebab and octopus for main. Great wine choices and had the half bottle of wine I ordered (very rare occurrence in restaurants). The staff were lovely and very attentive. Possibly a little too fast for my liking!
The best meal we've had in Madeira. The staff was so so nice even though we had a 5 year old and a 20months old that can be a bit difficult. We will go again soon and I would highly recommend it!
very tasty pork fillet with pepper. next to San Francisco gardens so right in centre. Couvert charge 9e but saves having a starter
Simply Amazing. Great food, good portion size, nice Staff. Steak was amazing. Prices are also reasonable. Nice Location.

I only had the scabbard fish, with banana, which was OK, but not amazing. However, that's my poor choice! Overall, the meal was good and other choices seemed excellent. I was very well treated and enjoyed my evening in the quiet atmosphere of this in-town, corner restaurant.

Our second time here. We love this restaurant. Traditional food cooked very well. Great little restaurant. Always advisable to book.
We were in Funchal for a few hours after a change in port on our cruise ship. Not having much time to plan, we found this little gem on Trip Advisor and were pleasantly surprised at how great our entire experience was! From the minute we walked in, we were greeted with a smile and welcome. I asked if they had gluten free menus and was told yes and that the chef would accommodate. Our waiter was very helpful in suggesting a local wine and choosing the best fish. He was careful in making sure that my food was gluten free. He was attentive and provided excellent service! This dinner was by far the best meal we had throughout our 10 day vacation! We hope to return sometime in the future!
Ate here twice during a weeks stay. Friendly cheerful and helpful staff recognised us on our second visit. Great cooking of local dishes, grilled squid and mussels and black pork were standouts. Yes there is a cover charge for bread but it’s light and comes with olives and sardine paste. Serious portions and great home-made deserts. It’s great room with a lively atmosphere
Recommended by a friend but we were left disappointed by the service. We had booked and were shown quickly to a table but then waited 15 minutes for a drink order to be taken. We were guided to a suitable wine as we are less familiar with Portuguese varieties. We chose the fish of the day which was very fresh and tasty and served with well cooked vegetables. We were going to have a crime brûlée but these were finished. No alternative was suggested or additional drinks offered. The restaurant was full of people from a cruise ship who seemed to get good attention but we felt a little neglected. We waited for our bill for some time.
We have eaten here several times in the past, always a lovely experience that is the reason why we were back. The restaurant seems to be under new management, but nothing was said about it. The food was good and tasty, the wine lovely, but the service, though professional, just lacked that extra bit it did include on the the previous occasions. Please be aware that the bread offered to start with is to be charged. It was not asked whether we'd like it or not, it was just placed on the table. This used to be our favourite restaurant, however overall the experience was a bit of a disappointment sadly.
