Vanguarda Madeirense offers a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for any time of day. The food is praised for its taste and quality, with standout dishes including omelettes, fish with banana or passion fruit, and sangria with white wine. Sweet potatoes are a must-try side. The waiter was really friendly and informative. The dishes were superb: arroz de marisco, bacalhau à casa and pudim de maracujá for dessert. Traditional bread was excellent. Gepetto got honey cake on the house. Swordfish was very good, outstanding bolo do caco hamburger, and lovely beef with mushrooms. Lots of traditional options - fish, meat and veggie. A lovely veggie kebab option is available. Prices are reasonable at around €25 per person. The outdoor seating in the pedestrianized street is an added bonus. This non-touristy spot provides a truly local experience. Prepare to wait a fair amount of time.
