A nice place for «fine dining». The restaurant have a good amount of vegetarian options, and a few vegan options (starter, main and dessert). Went there twice during my stay in Funchal.
We were looking for a place with a reasonable offering for meat eaters and vegetarians. Through our research we specifically looked for this shop, which - because it was on the 1st floor and had no tables on the street - was easy to miss. A relatively small operation with exceptionally good food. Small problem: we had three young ladies between 12 and 18 with us, and the description of the dishes ("sophisticated cuisine") was a bit confusing. There's no place to order a meat skewer with a mountain of fries, but in the end everyone found a dish and none of them disappointed, in fact most of them were excellent. In the end, everyone had an excellent quality starter, main course and dessert, and at a more than fair price. A clear recommendation if you want to skip the standard dishes.

It was an experience. Rarely have I eaten something so exclusive, delicious and well-groomed. The service was excellent, the menu was particularly special. The selection of vegan, special dishes is really good.

Fantastic experience. Brilliant menu, with lots of options for vegetarians (as well as meat eaters). Great service and a lovely wine list (all Portuguese wines).

Of the 7 restaurants we visited for dinner this week, I think this is the best choice in terms of quality of food, visual presentation and competent service! Highly recommended if you don't want to go to one of the many street restaurants!

In my opinion the best restaurant on the island. A wonderful menu, fish, meat, vegetarian and vegan. The best vegetarian food. The waiter and chef are super friendly. The food is of high quality and the wine tastes good. The ambience is very nice. A MUST FOR VEGETARIANS!

tl;dr skip this place
There appear to be only 2 people staffing the restaurant, one in the kitchen and the other runs between the kitchen and dining area looking perpetually flustered. The customer-facing one has zero customer service skills and just got in an argument with the table next to me about whether they actually ordered a dish (they did, I heard it, and it was more than 45 minutes ago).
It took absolutely forever to get my food, which was mediocre and the portions were small for the price, and then when I went to pay, he told me that they only accept cash (while standing 3 ft from a credit card terminal). Would not recommend

Restaurantji Recommends
I enquired about a reservation via Google while on hotel WiFi. I had then gone out and ended up with such awful signal around Funchal, hence never even got a notification of their response. I of course therefore didn’t even CONFIRM a reservation! I didn’t have signal to get directions to the restaurant to walk-in either, so ate somewhere near the hotel.
Two days later, I’m back in my home country with normal signal and I receive a message from them calling me a “time waster”? They then begin to swear at me and are continuing to harass me. This is incredibly abnormal behaviour, messaging someone who had not even confirmed a reservation?
Whoever is responding on Google, presumably Chef Luis based on initial messages, is clearly hostile - beware and be cautious if you’re going there in person!!
See all messages exchanged, with timestamps. The “time waster” onwards was received today, after not having seen their previous two messages two days ago. If you look at other low reviews and the restaurant’s responses you’ll see a common theme.
Can’t comment on the food so I won’t give 1 star for that specifically, but glad I didn’t have signal now!!!

Restaurant Olives has amazing vegan options in Madeira.
For appetizers, we had the beetroot salad with mustard adapted to vegan, which was perfect; and the avocado and tamarillo salad, which was good, though less exciting; the white bean veloute, which was delicious; and the bread, which was served warm (a must try).
For mains, we had the crispy seeded bread filled with chickpeas and pumpkin, which was delicious; and the roasted vegetables topped with pastry, which was good but a bit challenging to enjoy due to the pastry thrown over the top.
For desserts, we had the apple crisp with tangerine sorbet. It was a dessert I’ll think about for a while (particularly their homemade sorbet).
Overall, this is a top spot in Madeira for vegans and non-vegans alike (the non-vegans in our group loved their food too)

Great atmosphere and great furnishings.
The food was very tasty - perhaps it could have been a little more.
Vegetarian options: Vegan version of the risotto was very good.

Food wasn't bad, but very small portions and expensive. Unfortunately, the price/performance ratio is not good because the quality of the food is not justified by the price.

Slightly quirky restaurant with very attentive service. Food was delicious, menu was inventive ie more interesting than many others and all very reasonably priced. Would thoroughly recommend.
