Disappointed, we ordered four portions of swordfish and they gave us battered fish, it was good. But they charged us as if it were swordfish.

We stopped here off the tourist route. The food was good, we had the special burger in Bolo de Caco, the espresso was super - very hot, great crema - and the price for 2 meals, 2 drinks and 2 espressos was really cheap at €17. The service was friendly and quick. Overall, we thought it was great and can only recommend it!

Snack-Bar California is a true hidden gem in Funchal, Madeira.This unassuming little bar is a throwback to the old Madeiran "tascas" where you can enjoy a refreshing Coral beer with a side of "dentinho", a local snack.The bar is located right next to one of Funchal's most famous poncha bars, but it's still off the beaten path. This makes it a great place to escape the crowds and experience the real Madeira.One of the must-try dishes at the Snack-Bar California is the picado madeirense. This hearty stew is made with beef, and it's served with fried potatoes.It's the perfect way to catch your breath after a long stroll on the city.The service at the Snack-Bar California is friendly and attentive.
I came here for dinner and just wished it was a little better in a few ways. Overall the experience was ok but could have been so much better.When we first arrived, service seemed a little cold. We asked to see a menu and we were told there were only 2 items left. We arrived at a pretty reasonable time for dinner so were quite surprised the choices were so limited.The steaks we ordered were generally nice albeit overcooked and a little chewy in parts. At that pricepoint, I can't fault it too much but could have been better.Beyond having our initial order taken we did not see the staff once the entire time whilst we ate. And we even ended up having to go into the bar to pay. From reviews it seems this is very much a place to go for a good snack bar lunch but I'd avoid coming back for dinner.
