Unique place, it's really a cave, inside the rocks. One of the best roasted fish I've ever eaten in my life. Very good salad. Friendly and fun service. Affordable prices: whole sea bass for 2 people, starter, salad, 2 drinks, total €30. They accept cash and Mbway.

It is our headquarters, where it all began.Family environment, is what most characterizes it. Everything is said and heard. A true mountain shelter, built within granite stone. Thanks for so much.

We were exploring the penha and decided it would be nice to have a late lunch / early dinner. The venues atop the hill were either closed, crowded, or not appealing to us. Looking at the Tripadvisor map, we spotted this place, which at first glance (and initially even when walking around) appears to be in the middle of the forest, which on the penha is full of massive boulders. Is this an error? Why don't we see it? But don't be fooled -- it's there, a short walk below the foot of the hotel. And as you can see, "gruta" = grotto. The restaurant is in a cave or grotto between several massive boulders wedged together for millenia. It's small, cozy, and I imagine it would be nice and cool in the hot summer, but it was a tad windy so we were happy to get inside. Our Portuguese is very poor, but with some back and forth with the proprietors, it was made it clear to us that grilled dishes are their specialty, especially fish. So we ordered that, plus a bottle of wine. The fish was superb! Fresh, prepared simply, and grilled perfectly, served with potatoes and a side salad. Our hosts were lovely and very welcoming! We were the first customers of the day, and people began gradually drifiting in as we were finishing up. Almost everyone pops their head in and asks the same thing we did, in a state of near disbelief: is *this* the restaurant?! Yes it is. Utterly charming. Note that grottos do NOT facilitate electronic payments: it's cash only.

Must visit. Location is wrong, go down the path Google shows you and follow the road a bit down. it's just beneath a parking, car park. try 41,4325510, -8,2702535We couldn't find it at first but made it in the end. We used a translation app, and had the best experience. ❤️

One of the best and most unique restaurants I’ve ever been to. Food was fantastic, service was top-notch, and the atmosphere was like nothing you’ve ever experienced before. Think hobbit hole with incredible food. Will be back every time I come to Portugal. Thank you Mendes family for the amazing hospitality <3

A real tavern to spend some quality time with friends, for lunch or dinner. The most typical one you can find. The place, in addition to being beautiful due to its natural surroundings, is sui generis: built under two huge boulders, with little people inside, but many granite tables outside sheltered by cork oaks. The hosts are the most genuine and fun around. Good people! It serves varied snacks and homemade vinho verde.Roasts (on request): kid, veal, octopus, etc. Cod, grilled sea bass and excellent cod frittersI recommend booking a table.Free public parking 100 meters away, next to Hotel da Penha.
