Parreirinha de Alfama offers an intimate and original fado experience in a small, dark, cavern-like setting. The excellent food and friendly staff create a warm atmosphere that complements three sets of intense and virtuosic music performances by different singers and guitar players. Located in a hidden corner of Alfama, this magical evening is a bit pricey, at $65 per person not including drinks, but worth it for the fantastic music. Reservations are recommended a few weeks in advance, and it’s cash only. The space is very small and intimate, making it an amazing date night option.
Guests enjoy a set meal that includes an appetizer, main course, and dessert. Popular dishes include the garlic shrimp appetizer, beef as their best entree, sardines, carpaccio of bacalau, and the excellent seafood stew in a bread bowl. The seafood combo of octopus and prawns is also hearty. For dessert, the creme brulee and rice pudding, a house specialty, are delicious. The show consists of three parts, with each voice more striking than the last, supported by exceptional guitar accompaniment. Guests are encouraged to listen and feel the music, as filming the performers is not allowed. Overall, it is a lovely experience that feels authentic and welcoming.
