Today for lunch was my first time at Cancela Velha. It was busy but no waiting, seated immediately. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Was with my brother and our Portuguese language teacher. We all ordered the soup (nabissa), breads and olives and cheese appetizers, bacalhau cakes, daily special (pescado and arroz com gelho). Appetizers, soup, and daily fish and rice specials were delicious. I particularly enjoyed the rice. We ordered some traditional deserts, natas de ceu, pudin, bolo traditional. Deserts were delicious especially the natas de ceu. We ordered an apple turnover to take home for our mom. Our server said “warm it slightly and serve with ice cream”, which of course we did. Our mom is 92 and she has tried a lot of apple turnovers in her 9+ decades, and she said “this is the best I have tasted, get more next time please.” Overall an excellent experience and since we are now locals, we will be back again!

Very, very good oven-baked rice, as well as potatoes and roasted garlic, very generous portions. But much better than the food is the friendliness of the staff and especially the restaurant owner, Mr. Manuel Monteiro. It was the first time we went to this restaurant and we were treated like family. I simply loved it, as did my family.I will definitely be back and I highly recommend it.Thank you very much Mr. Manuel and all your employees

An excellent example of the art of welcoming and cooking well! Roasted lamb with a different flavor and preparation, living up to its reputation, well accompanied with appetizing rice. Cozy chicken soup, equally generous mirandesa steak, accompanied by good starters and an excellent mature red house wine. Friendly service, welcoming space with beautiful details. I absolutely recommend it for a good family lunch!

We were very well received and we could see that the owner of Cancela Velha was happy and proud to serve us the food from his restaurant. Everything we ate was delicious. I rarely eat meat, but the steak at Cancelha Velha is out of this world, and the sausages at the entrance were also very good. I also really liked the cabbage that accompanied the steak, they were very tasty. Finally, the dessert: Freixo slices which were also great. It was an excellent experience and I will definitely be back in these parts one day.
