The best Portuguese traditional food, fish and sea food. Even The rice of vegetables is amazing Thanks Mr Manuel
My dinner at O Gaveto was the highlight of my recent trip to Portugal. We ordered so many wonderful dishes, and each one was better than the first. We ate for hours : the barnacles were as though they were taken directly from the sea, and the scallops were the most divine thing I have ever eaten in my life: they were silky, creamy, salty...just incredible. We had a dish with rice and lobster which was so delicious and had a wonderful depth of flavor . The wine list was also incredible. I ordered a bottle from one of my favorite producers, and minutes later he ended up sitting at the table next me- and before we knew it, were suddenly sharing stories and wine with him. What are the chances?!?! The service was OUTSTANDING, and they were so patient as my friend continued to order more and more food and wine. I will never forget my evening at O Gaveto - this is a DO NOT MISS restaurant just outside of Porto. Absolutely wonderful - I highly recommend it. Thank you O Gaveto for your hospitality, your classic service, and for an evening I won't soon forget.
*this review is based on a solo dining experience. I arrived at noon on the dot and was seated without a reservation. The host/server seem a bit annoyed that I didn't have a reservation, though I don't believe their website even allowed for reservations for one. He didn't speak English but still tried his best to seat me. I was handed a VERY CONDENSED English menu, and didn't realize until half way through my meal, I looked around and everyone else got a the Portuguese menu which definitely had so many more options. it irked me because why wouldn't you want tourists to order more things? Things I ordered: *at the beginning of the meal they give you TOAST. don't eat it if you don't want to pay 2 euros* It's good but I don't understand why they don't let the patrons know it's not complimentary ( I know bread is not free in Portugal, but you'd think they'd give you bread considering how expensive the dishes are here) ? Does the 2 euro toast give them that much more revenue? A glass of Champagne: 14,50 euros. The sautéed clams : they were good. small portion for the price. Big Stuffed crab: Crab was sweet, fresh, and the stuffing was very thick. this was 1.5 lb rock crab? It was good enough to fill me but forewarning - this crab costs 65 euros >> which is VERY overpriced ( especially for Portugal ) don't order. Oysters: you can skip. I'd walk down to a market and get oysters from there instead. Raspberry sorbet: eh. Service: I'm not sure if it was because I was a solo diner or if it was because I didn't speak Portuguese but, only one server was semi attentive to me. He spoke the most English. I felt really unwelcome to be honest. I only finished half my crab and wanted to get out quick because I was getting so many stares ( for being the only asian diner? I don't know lol ) the only good thing about this restaurant was that there were many locals dining. so if you're a local or have friends/family that are local - perhaps this might be an enjoyable meal. Then came the bill. It came out to 114 euro. I honestly shocked. I expected to be expensive considering since it's on the more upscale side. They charged me for the tap water! 2 euros. For packaging - 2 euros Toast - 1, 50 euros I mean it's only a couple of bucks but the tap water should be free. Absolutely ridiculous. Then to top off the unwelcoming service, they asked me for tip at the end of my meal. I appreciate European servers leaving me alone for my meal but they were just really shady all around. I left tip anyway. Don't come here. you can find better quality, better service, for affordable prices just a couple blocks away.
I loved the food damn is very delicious . I wanna come back again to try new things . The prices is really good . Very delicious very clean ✔️
Ordered Garlic Shrimp, Clams, Lobster Mayonese and Seafood Rice. Seafood Rice and Garlic Shrimp were incredible, but Lobster Mayonese (95 euro) is not worth the price.
We had an amazing dinner at O’Gaveto as suggested by Catavino Tours, a tour company focused on food and wine throughout Portugal and Spain. The restaurant is a 8€ Uber ride from downtown Porto, so not that far. Takes about 30 mns in rush hour and 15 mns back. This town is where the Porto fish market is so fish cannot be fresher. At first, the waiter handed us a pretty condensed English menu. But I had seen some other dishes on their web site so I asked. Then they gave us a Portuguese menu which had many more dishes and some highlighted. This menu is updated everyday!!! We had amazing food, clams in olive oil and garlic, razor clams that were so tender and sweet and then we wanted some big shrimp which are so good in Portugal. We didn’t know what the various kinds of shrimp are so the waiter brought a huge tray out with all kinds and we picked the carabineiros which are the large red shrimp, not as big as the Tiger prawns but every bit as sweet and juicy. We also had a good bottle of white wine bottled under the restaurant brand. Overall, we loved our dinner and will be back for sure. It wasn’t cheap but with food, wine, dessert and service it came to be about 75€ per person. Strongly recommend
We travelled to Matosinhos on a recommendation - and did not enjoy the restaurant. The waiter was reluctant and did not take any particular interest in us. We are new to Portugal and have very limited Portuguese, which was a problem here unlike everywhere else we went in Matosinhos, Porto and Gaia - we have no expectations concerning language and are quite prepared to use translation apps, but the waiter wasn't interested in us because we were not Portuguese speakers. We ate some squid, which was burnt tasting - and lobster rice, which was nice but quite expensive. We had to chase for drinks and sat with empty glasses for a considerable time - and at one point a waiter poured my wife a very short glass of champagne, but left it as the bottle was empty and disappeared. Would not return - at home we would have discussed the bill. Two stars as it is clear they have good quality fish - but our experience was not good.
Had stuffed crab followed by turbot and the best chocolate mousse in Portugal all served superbly by Daniel. Typically authentic Portuguese fish restaurant
O Gaveto is an established restaurant known for it's fresh seafood. It did not disappoint. The food and wine were excellent and the staff was knowledgeable and very friendly. We had a great evening.

Excellent food and perfect beverages. Very friendly staff and nice atmosphere. We had a spesial celebration and this restaurant was just right for a special occasion!
Fantastic seafood restaurant. Proper old boy waiters who know their stuff. We had barnacles, clams and stuffed crab. Was easily enough for 2 of us. Great glass of port to finish. 5 stars.
We were recommended this restaurant by one of the waiters at Grahams Wine Bar. We shared Oysters to start with which were excellent, and the Seafood stew - a very generous portion and well worth the menu - we were both able to have seconds and then my partner finished it off! We enjoyed a lovely bottle of Vino Verde with this - wait staff were attentive but without the feeling we were being rushed, it was a laid back atmosphere and we would definitely recommend!
Food was ok. Oysters were very briny. I had sole which was fairly tasteless. Potatoes- boiled and nothing else. Hubby had squid. His dish was good. Wait staff leaves MUCH to be desired. Had to ask for more wine, poured our own water, had to beg for the check. Not worth it.
One of the most interesting urban shadows in the center of Valongo. Great snacks service and friendliness
