A Yuletide Elegy for Chez Temporel: Ode to the $89 Festive Fiasco

Oh, Chez Temporel, thou hidden “gem” of Vieux-Québec,
We ventured forth on Christmas Day, hearts full of cheer and check,
Dreaming of French finesse, of flavors divine and grand—
Instead, we paid a king’s ransom for culinary contraband!

The soup arrived, a creamy squash affair,
“OK,” we whispered, “nothing special—fair.”
A lukewarm shrug in a bowl, like melted snow from the street,
The only course that didn’t beg for immediate defeat.

Then came the pork rillette, oh what a thrill!
A grayish pâté blob, tasteless as a bill.
We poked it warily—could this be dog food in disguise?
Faces around us twisted in collective, horrified surprise.
“Is it… edible?” one table pondered with a frown,
While we awarded it half a star—generously, not to let it down.

But lo! The main event: the duck breast, pink and proud,
Promised blueberry bliss, yet delivered a chew-fest loud.
So tough, so rubbery, our knives wept in despair,
Sawing futilely like lumberjacks in thin air.
This poor bird gave its life for such a grievous sin—
Overcooked by a chef who’s clearly never been… within
A kitchen worth its salt. The duck, from beyond the grave,
Must be quacking curses: “Avenge me, for pity’s sake!”

The dessert? A praline chocolate “success” cake, we suppose—
But success eluded us; it vanished in mediocrity’s throes.
The rest? A solid one-star symphony of “meh” and regret,
For $89 a head—plus wine pairing, lest we forget!

If this is “high-end” holiday haute cuisine in Québec’s embrace,
Then color us deeply disappointed—nay, utterly disgraced.
Worst Christmas feast ever; we’d have fared better with takeout from the mall.
Save your souls (and your wallets)—avoid Chez Temporel this y’all!

🤮🎄🔪 (1/5 stars—because zero isn’t an option)

This was by far the best dining experience we had in Quebec City during our short stay. Every dish was thoughtfully prepared and beautifully presented. The mushroom risotto was rich, creamy, and impeccably balanced, while the duck was tender, flavorful, and cooked to absolute perfection. The service was equally impressive—our server was warm, attentive, and efficient without ever being intrusive. The overall atmosphere made the experience even more enjoyable. We will most definitely be back on our next visit.

The food differs quite a lot from the photos on Google, don't expect it to look as good and taste as good as their previous menu and photos from 2 years ago. The service is quite amicable, but the ingredients used in their food are subpar. Like they use margarine instead of butter. I hope they return to the taste and look of the past, instead of what they currently have.

An unexpected delight and highlight of our visit to Quebec City. We chose the restaurant impulsively, and I’m so glad for it.

The staff was exceptional and warm, and the food was the perfect balance of delicious and cozy (especially after a rainy winter day).

Eats: French onion soup, escargot au gratin, mushroom risotto, flank steak, and crème brûlée.

If I had to try and find any negative, the only thing I’d change is the crème brûlée brittle being more, well, brittle (it was a bit soft), but the creaminess of the interior more than made up for it.

Our favorite meal of the trip

A great alternative just off the gamut of touristy spots on the main roads.
Delicious food. The best French we've had on this trip at fair prices. Onion soup, burger and mustard chicken stew all fantastic. The maple pie needs a little loving..
Nice waitress (flirty) needs a little polishing but good at recommendations.

We were desperately looking for a cafe in the area and came across Chez Temporel.
The coffee was great and the croissant was a warm delight. $25 for two incl taxes and tip.

We’re visiting Québec for the first time, and this restaurant was just a one-minute walk from our rental—otherwise we might never have discovered it. It’s a bit off the beaten path and fairly unassuming from the outside, but the food is absolutely outstanding.

We started with the soupe du jour and warm olives, both of which were delicious. For our mains, we ordered the flank steak and the hamburger, and everything was incredible—the burger may honestly be the best I’ve ever had. We couldn’t choose just one dessert, so we ordered all three and shared them at the table. The maple pie was especially exquisite.

So far, this has been our best meal in Québec. A true hidden gem!
