My wife and I drove out to Hemingway from Myrtle as we were here from Virginia on winter vacation. The reviews for this restaurant were enough for us to come and try the food and visit the pits to see whole hogs being cooked. We went in and ordered, there was no BBQ so we got ribs and chicken with sides and an extra side of sauce. The ladies in the restaurant were Fantastic, Helpful, and Friendly. We grabbed our food and decided to read the historical plaque near the entrance of the pits. Subsequently, my wife asked if we could take a "peek" at the pits, The older gentleman in the pit tent with several others reluctantly said, well you want a peek, go ahead. He, nor anyone else came over to show, explain, or ask if we had questions, it was as cold as cold can be. Within a few minutes of walking through the pits (we saw no hogs being cooked) and out the back to see the fire starter barrel, we came back through the pit tent and said thanks. The same gentleman made some other smart comment and we got in our car and left. It was not a welcoming visit at all to the pits as the reviews indicated. Perhaps we caught the B-Team. Yet the food was good but we will probably will not be going back anytime soon. Been there done that. v/r, Dr. K. King

So, I'm reading an article in Southern Living "The South's Top 50 Barbecue Joints Of 2023" and it lists Scott's Bar-B-Q as #5. I enjoy BBQ and like to try deferent places and Scott's is in Hemingway, SC. ROAD TRIP. So, my wife and I we drive from Aiken to try out Scott’s. (A two- and half-hour drive) The setting was as described and that doesn't bother me. The employees were nice enough. We ordered the three-meat plate that comes with two sides. We got slaw and baked beans. The ribs had very little meat on them. The pulled pork was moist but didn't have flavor other than a red pepper bite but was not "followed by a sweet surge of hardware smoke that lingers on the tongue" like described in the article. The chicken was the worst meat on the plate as it was dry and flavorless. The beans could have come out of a can. If they didn't, they are working too hard to make Bush's. The slaw was OK, nothing to even write about. This is the first BBQ joint we have tried on this "The South's Top 50 Barbecue Joints Of 2023" and I am now very concerned with going off this writer's opinion. I can’t recommend this BBQ joint and we won't be visiting again.

What a wonderful place, with such good bbq -- even without Rodney! For a detailed review, see john tanners bbq blog and search "Scott's"

I have eaten here for years and in my opinion they have the best BBQ in all of South Carolina (and yes, I am a BBQ freak). Their sides aren't all that great, but just get a pound or 2, or 3 of their Q and make your own sides. I go there at least once every month or two... its about 40 mins from where I live... well worth the drive. Never disappointed.

This place is a hole in the wall find. It is like an old country store that has a grill. It looks sketchy for sure but, my word! It is amazing bbq. I got the bbq sandwich and I got plenty of bbq for 2 sandwiches. There is no bun it is all old school white bread. I have not had this kind of bread in so long I forgot I even liked it. It was fresh and soft. The bathroom looks questionable but, I swanee you gotta just have some faith and stop in. The sauce is on point but, the slaw was a little too much mayonnaise for me. Bring cash theres no, credit cards, checks, credit or pawning accepted. Lol they are the real deal and you can see the men folk out there tending to the food. Just amazing ?

Scott's is the top BBQ choice in South Carolina for Thrill List, the crew at Big Seven Travel, and James Roller at Destination BBQ. It sits atop the top 50 survey of southern BBQ restaurants conducted by Southern Living in 2019. And day in and day out, it continues to live up to its reputation. First, the price point is exceptional. $14 purchased a half pound of whole hog pulled pork with classic east Carolina sauce and bread, medium sized sides of baked beans and coleslaw, and two 20 ounce bottles of Diet Pepsi. The whole hog is deeply smoked and full of flavor with or without the sauce, but what makes this one of the best pulled pork dishes in the country is the buttery texture. Since both sides were unremarkable, we used them as palate cleansing bites to keep the taste of the meat fresh as we slowly but methodically gobbled it down. We saved the two slices of bread to sop up the sauce. So, the value here is very high, and as an added bonus you get to tour a slice of the South Carolina back country while travelling to and from. Highly recommended.

I was very surprised! A tiny little hole it the wall that had the best barbeque, I have ever tasted. I strongly suggest a visit!

Great barbecue stop full of history and character. Would never have stopped if I was not looking for it. It truly is a treasure and did not disappoint. If you love barbecue you must make the trip

OMG best pork bbq ever. Don't let the exterior turn you away. Crude, down home appearance but way above average food. Carry out only and no inside seating at this time. I had pulled pork and ribs. I can't say enough about the them. And the bbq beans were just as good. Experience this treasure before you die.

So good we had to buy more. Only take out at the moment (may change on the 28th on March)but once again we'll worth the trip.

It was just ok. Sandwich was too spicy for me. They should have a mild and spicy to fit everyone's palate. Didn't have that pit smoked/barrel taste as the guys talked about on the show. Went only 1 time and that was enough for me. The building was extremely run down and wasn't the cleanest place, but had an "A" rating. Haven't tried their Charleston location, but probably the same.

Today's main food goal was heading 2 hours from Charleston to Hemingway SC to hit the OG of SC bbq, Scott's Pit Cooked BBQ. This is Rodney Scott's parents place where he learned the trade of whole hog bbq. It's a really nondescript part market part bbq house in a tiny rural hamlet. Pretty rundown with home printed/written signs about such things as no credit and no service for slouching pants. Inside is devoid of much market items except bread, chips, and soda. The smell of burning wood and cooked pork was quite pungent. No indoor seating during Covid. Tables outside though. Menu was basic bbq-chopped whole hog, ribs, and chicken either plates or by the pound. Served with white bread and your choice of beans, potato salad, or slaw-all commercially produced. We both chose the same meal-ribs with slaw and potato salad. Rib portion was generous, 3 good size pork spare ribs. Sides were small in plastic containers. The sauce here is served on the side and is vinegar based with some chili's and other ingredients kept private by the man who toured us through the pit house. That sauce is also what is mopped onto the hogs during the final phase of cooking-no more seasoning is used in the cook. It does have some "heat" with the chili's but really compliments the meat if used sparingly. Once seated outside, we were entertained by the resident skinny kitten looking for some droppings. So cute. The ribs were tender as any ever tasted to the point of falling off the bone when you picked up. But this didn't detract at all from the amazing flavor. Smoky from the oak/pecan wood. And just the right amount of spice from the sauce. Some of the best. Sides were pretty low quality but potato salad was okay. The service inside was perfunctory but we met a couple of nice guys out by the pit room, one of whom said if I wanted to check out the inside come on in. After finishing up the meal we went inside. He guided us out to the back where the coals were being prepared by placing the wood above large burn barrels and coals were gathered at the bottom for transfer inside to the pits. These are made from stacks of cinder block with metal grates at the top for holding the whole hogs. Cooked overnight inside downward overnight, then flipped and mopped before picked and chopped. The long time traditional way of SC pork bbq. Off the beaten path but not to be missed in in the vicinity and looking for great local bbq.

Drove over from Pawley's Island on a "too cool for the beach" kind of day. Had a great drive over, and new we were in the correct place. We arrived with a line out of the door, which was exactly what we expected for food this good. Will be going back soon!

A friend drove from Augusta Ga and I met him there. I’m from Florence. Parking is ample and most is on the side of the road. A line of about 20-30 out the door but only took about 30 minutes to get in. They only allow 3 people inside at a time due to the pandemic. The ribs have a great Smokey flavor and the seasoning was perfect. However I’m not a fan of spareribs and very little meat on the bone. Wish they were babybacks or St Louis instead. The potato salad was fantastic. The vinegar pepper sauce was great. Bring cash as they don’t use debit or credit machines.
