I had high expectations based on what I've heard; they were not met. The service staff looked sharp; the manager in jeans did not. The place smelled like raw fish, it was extremely off-putting. By the end of the meal we felt like an imposition to our server. Having the table assistant filling gallon jugs with tea right in front of us as we are eating dinner takes away from any ambiance there could have been. The drinks were decent. The baked feta was not seasoned well, the pork was overcooked and missing the tasso and sauce; the mashed potatoes were unseasoned. Hopefully it was just an off night for their team.

The food was delicious and the service was awesome. The history of the building made the experience even more special.

Holy cow!!! Such different yet amazing flavors. I had the Tuna smoked Poke' which was nothing like a regular poke'. It was like nothing I have ever tasted before. My husband had the sliders and that was also nothing like we have ever tasted before, but so delicious. I can't say enough about this place. We are from the Hickory, NC area. We were just down to visit our son who lives here. We will be visiting more now! lol

We visited this restaurant for the fourth or fifth time. Again, the food was excellent! I got a crab dip, appetizer and Asian salad as my meal. My husband got an appetizer of pork/beef sliders. We shared a tasty peanut butter pie for dessert. This place is “off the charts “excellent.
A man came out to check on those sitting at the counter. He said he was the dishwasher. It turns out it was the owner, Rob Masone. He had a great personality and was very friendly! After he left, a woman sitting close to us said he was the owner and they had gone to high school together. (I guess the joke was on me).
It’s an experience, all by itself, sitting at the counter and watching the pastry chef make desserts. I highly recommend it.

Wonderful experience from start to finish. We have been here a few times and will continue to go back.

Extremely disappointing experience. We waited over an hour just to place our food order, and during that entire time no server acknowledged us, explained the delay, or apologized. We were left sitting there wondering if we had been forgotten.

What made this worse was the lack of basic customer service. Even if the kitchen was backed up or the restaurant was short-staffed, simple communication would have made a difference. Instead, there was none. No check-ins, no updates, no accountability.

The food was decent and the bar does not do substitution. The place looked decent.

Dining out should feel welcoming and attentive--this felt careless and dismissive. The experience completely overshadowed any potential positives and left us frustrated rather than satisfied. Unfortunately, this is not a place I'd return to or recommend unless service standards significantly improve.

Just walked in off the street for lunch while walking around. Had no idea of the menus or anything but decided to give it a try. The food was amazing as was the presentation. Everything was fresh and had amazing flavor balance! The portion sizes were very generous! Brandy was our server and she was equally amazing, took the time to answer our questions and explain the preparation! She was very personable and professional.

Service was excellent. Food was not as good as past visits. Shrimp and Grits not up to par.No sauce?? Dry. Wife steak was good.

We try somewhere new every Christmas Eve as a present to ourselves. Kounter did NOT disappoint! The service was impeccable - attentive without being overbearing & everyone was so doggone NICE. The staff helped us pick yummy drinks (pear martini & a sparkling lavender lemonade). The food was outstanding - we had the cauliflower tots, lobster gnocchi, & shrimp & grits. I was pretty much in a happy food coma already, but we had to get dessert! Mom's chocolate pie & the cheesecake cannoli sealed the deal. Kounter is definitely on our list for the regular “where do you want to go for dinner?” conversation!

Our new favorite place in York County, the food & service was outstanding! We came for a late lunch on Xmas Eve & were not disappointed! Drinks were top notch, food was outstanding & service was immaculate! We will be back soon!

I was told about Kounter a couple of years ago by my administrator but I didn't go until today 12/23/2025. When I Tell you this place was Awesome, it was AWESOME. The food was FANTASTIC and UTTERLY Delicious. Everything is fresh. Kounter makes their own pickles, salad dressing and homemade ketchup for their homemade fries.

Brandy was our server and she was THE BEST. She was kind, patient in telling us about the food on the menu, she kept checking on us to make sure we were alright or if we needed anything....EXCELLENT Service.

The Historic aspect of Kounter was an additional treat.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND KOUNTER🥰

We live eating at Kounter. The food is always amazing. The service is always on. They were a little under staffed for Christmas week, but wasn't terrible.
