Monkey Wrench Smokehouse

This is maybe my second time eating here, and this evening reminded me why.

We went to sidewall with a birthday coupon that was on its last day and they were booked for a private event.

We were really hungry and this place was close so my husband suggested trying it. Complete strike out.

Ordered pulled pork sandwich with sweet potato crunch and two cheeseburgers with fries.

Food was completely bland and flavorless. No seasoning on the pulled pork or the burger patty. The fries were soggy. The sweet potato crunch was not sweet potato crunch. It was just pureed sweet potato with some sugar and cinnamon and a sparse sprinkling of some sand like substance. No oats, no marshmallow, it wasn't baked. It was basically just babyfood. My brother commented that he would rather have a McDonald's burger. My husband agreed that he almost would too. The pulled pork was moist, but flavorless and all of the tomato based sauces that were mild were so sweet they tasted the same.

The portions were also stingy for the price.

As a Greenville native this just doesn't rate in terms of barbecue for me. It just seems like a trendy eatery for transplants.

All of the servers seemed great though and were super attentive to us and everyone around us.

Save your money and head to Mike and Jeff's. A hole in the wall, but the best in the area. It's authentic.

We really enjoyed our meal. There was a really laid back atmosphere. We visited at 1:30 so the lunch crowd had left and the dinner crowd had not started yet. We had the monkey wrench cheese burger with fries and a half rack of ribs with Mac and cheese, collards, and fried okra. Everything was delicious. They provide children's toys at the back of the building. There is parking available behind the building in the church parking lot (this parking is not available on Sundays btwn certain hours). We will definitely be back soon

Had a craving for BBQ while in town and found this place. Got there close to 6pm and they close at 7 so they were out of rubs and sweet potatoe crunch. But what we did have was very good. The chopped bbq, bake beans and macaroni and cheese was good but have to give major props to the fries. Hand cut, skin on, well seasoned, and hot. Great and tasty sauces. Our waitress, Laura, was awesome. She said she was new but did a great job. Will definitely be back next time in town.

Service was excellent! We ordered the platter for 4-6. Ribs, wings, pulled pork and brisket, plus 5 sides. They were out of ribs, bummer but I get it. We got an extra portion of brisket. We were disappointed by how little brisket there was. Everything was delicious and well worth the cost!

Ask for sliced brisket got a sandwich decided not to complain about it but sandwich only had burnt ends on it wit a big glob of cheese not sure how they messed it up but they did all the sides was good service was even great food is expensive for me only it came up over 30 bucks

Awesome! We got the super smokehouse for 4-6. Best collards ever plus bbq ribs, brisket, wings, sausage etc. everything was excellent! Will be returning next time in travelers rest.

Third time, we walked out after sitting for 10 minutes and never being acknowledged. The table behind us that came in after us had their drink order takes, drinks brought out, and food order taken while we just sat. Numerous staff members were chatting at the bar and watched us walk out and never said a word.

Neat place. Meat has a good smoky flavor. However the sauce needs work. I would describe it as all ketchup based. The kansas city style wasn't even close.
