This restaurant was within easy walking distance from the Arlington Hotel, where we were staying while visiting the Laura Ingalls Wilder pageant and histroic sites in De Smet, SD, and was recommended by the hotel staff, so we gave it a try. The owner/staff were very friendly and welcoming. We ordered small-plate sirloins, which was good, but the most memorable part of our meal was the roasted vegetables we chose as sides! They were so great! Root vegetables, etc. So good!

Ask the waiter what kind of fish is the fish and chips dinner made with and you will be told it is called Pangasianodon. Most people have never heard of this fish so they, along with me, may be curious and go ahead and spend $17 to try it. After dinner when I got home I looked up this fish and the common name for Pangasianodon in the US is Swai. With a bit of research you will discover that swai fish is nothing like cod or halibut which make a wonderful fried fish meals. Swai is a Vietnamese native and is a omnivorous bottom feeding fish similar to catfish though in a different family. In other words it's cheap. Very cheap. Even with today's prices you can still buy a 4 lb bag for $15 or less retail so the restaurant likely pays less to purchase it for the restaurant. Research for yourself and you will also find a number of authors suggest that this is not the healthiest fish to be eating because of farming conditions. Needless to say I was UNDERwhelmed with my "whitefish" dinner after my first bite. I was served four smallish thin fillets of some unidentifiable fish meat. It was properly cooked for what it was and the batter used produced a decent coating but it was not what I expected. It was not thick, moist, flaky or flavorful. All I could taste was the breading. I'm guessing the waiters have no idea of what they are selling and simply parrot what they have been told to say. Please think twice before ordering if you want a nice piece of fried fish! On the other hand the service was both friendly and timely and our party had no other concerns.

The 1481 Grille was right next to the motel we were staying at so it was very convenient. We had the French Dip sandwich & it was good. Our server was very nice too. The only negative was that it was way too dark for me. It was hard to read the menu. I thought some of the prices were a little high but the food & service were good, so I would recommend this place.
