First of all the workers service was excellent.
However, the food was unfortunately sub par considering all the good things I’ve heard. I ordered the balls of fire sub. Visually, the sub promised heat— a spicy bold sauce and a melty cheese veil. But under closer inspection, the bread was slightly soggy at the center, compromising texture from the first bite. A toasting option could have salvaged this somewhat. Next, The “fire” element fell flat. The spice register hovered at a gentle simmer rather than an inferno—more mild jalapeño warmth than genuine kick. Sauces felt one-dimensional: tomato-forward with faint herbal notes but missing the smokiness or pepper punch that would align with its fiery name. The Balls of Fire felt undercooked in concept and execution. Priced on par with other hot subs—but without the punch or quality—it left a noticeable disconnect between cost and experience. While the friendly staff and casual deli vibe have garnered widespread appreciation, the sub’s shortcomings overshadowed these elements this time. Overall, the Balls of Fire Sub is a misnomer—it doesn’t deliver on flavour, heat, or texture. The limp bread, subdued spice, and forgettable sauce make it feel like a placeholder rather than a standout. Hope to see better from this beloved shop in the future.

EDIT: The photo attached to this review doesn’t reflect what I ordered—I received a cold sub with peppers, which is exactly why I was hoping for a toasted option. For a place competing in the hot sandwich space, not offering any way to heat a sub feels like a serious gap.
Unfortunately, the owner’s response to this feedback was dismissive and unprofessional, labeling it as “another troll” and deflecting with past reviews and awards. Rather than engaging with the critique, the reply leaned on general praise and ignored the actual concerns. It’s disappointing when a business that gets so much right in person misses the mark entirely in how it handles honest feedback.

What I received was very different from anything I know as Italian.
I don’t know why. tomato with no flavor. I don’t understand how you use the word “Italian” like this. It has history. You don’t just take any meat and bread, and say its Italian.

Small shop selling a selection of Italian style sandwiches and drinks. The sandwiches are generally pre-made and wrapped in plastic to be sold within a limited time period. The sandwiches we had were fresh and tasty. I would have preferred a made to order concept but I guess having pre-made allows them to deal with busy periods without needing a lot of staff. Primarily take out but there were a couple of chairs along the window.

I came in right at closing, 3 mins to 3:00pm on a Saturday. The cooler was empty so I was ready to cut my losses and find another option. Erin greeted me with a smile and offered to make me anything on the menu.
To go this length when she was probably trying to close up shop after a busy day meant a lot to me. This kind of customer service is hard to find and her cheery attitude carried me through the rest of my busy day.

Gangsters is a sandwich shop located on the main stretch of businesses on Broadway in Saskatoon. One of the first businesses you see after crossing over the Broadway Bridge. It is an Italian sandwich shop with about 7 or 8 sandwich options to choose from.
It is set up to be a takeout shop, but there are some chairs in front of the store. The restaurant has limited hours as it is only open for lunch on Tuesday to Saturday. Not sure if this was a COVID related decision, but sandwiches are premade and wrapped in plastic. You choose what you want and pay at the counter. I am unsure if you have the choice to get your sandwich freshly made or not. Using a premade sandwich operating model seems to indicate that there is no option to customize the sandwich.
I grabbed an Italian deli sandwich and took it back to the hotel to eat. I would have liked the option to have the sandwich toasted, as it seemed like a sandwich that was put in the fridge. The bread hardens a little. I did love the basil mayo in the sandwich, which had a very unique and fresh flavor. Overall, I thought the sandwich was decent, but I wonder if it would have tasted better if it was freshly made rather than premade.
