We had an absolutely unforgettable dining experience at The Appalachian in the Smokies during a beautiful Fall weekend. From start to finish, everything was flawless! Ari, the hostess, made sure we were accommodated beautifully, offering drinks at the bar while they prepared our table, and Luke, our server, took care of us with warmth and attention. The ambiance was perfectly romantic, and the open kitchen added a unique touch.

It was my boyfriend’s birthday, and the team went above and beyond. They comped our appetizers, the general manager stopped by to check on us, and they even surprised us with a personalized printed menu for him to take home. To top it off, Ari brought over a small bouquet of yellow flowers she had thoughtfully gathered from the table centerpieces — giving them a second life before closing. Such a sweet and personal gesture!

Even a small mix-up with our leftovers was handled immediately, with a fresh dish prepared for us to take home. The food was phenomenal. We shared the Butterbean hummus with crudité, then he had the hanger steak and I had the trout — everything was perfect. I’m an Old-Fashioned girl, and their Earl Grey lavender-infused twist was unforgettable. Bartender Sam did an amazing job.

The Appalachian delivers exceptional food, flawless service, and a truly romantic experience. We can’t wait to return.

Dang, this restaurant just really missed the mark tonight. We’ve been here once before and were excited to come back with our parents. However, the experience was less than impressive.

We called ahead 15 minutes in anticipation of the fact that we had our 18 month-old dining with us and asked if they could have two appetizers out on the table for us when we arrived. On the phone, they were super accommodating and seemed eager to oblige the request. However, when we arrived, they did not have the apps out for another 10 minutes and had not anticipated the need for a high chair when I told them our 18 month old was dining with us…

We then ordered cocktails and our dinner. The cocktails took 40 minutes to come out (two cocktails and one beer) and our food an hour.

We ordered a whole smorgasbord of food—some good, some not so much. I enjoyed the trout, my husband found it bland. He enjoyed the elk, I found it cooked medium rare as we asked, but still very tough—I think that’s just how elk tastes. Preparation seemed good though. My side of carrots was extremely underwhelming. Not that I get jazzed about ordering carrots, but they seemed worth a shot and they were definitely a waste of money—they were hard and crunchy, certainly didn’t taste like they were cooked all the way through. Which is shocking that they were rushed to get through our food since it took so long to come out.

A manager walked around and checked in with literally every table but ours—not sure what about our table didn’t deserve checking in.

Anywho, we originally dined here because we had heard the chef had come from Blackberry and we thoroughly enjoyed our culinary experience at Blackberry Mountain. Our first trip here was, from what I remember, good. This trip, not so much. It’s not like there are a ton of other excellent food options to choose from in the area, but jury is still out if we give it another shot. It was simply very underwhelming.

The Elk was incredible. Filet was so tender and juicy! We had the hummus and veggies for appetizer and YUMMY!! There was so much that we did not even have room for dessert. The corn bread that comes with the meal of light and fluffy. An impressive whiskey list and a huge variety of wine choices as well! This place should NOT be missed!

Absolutely incredible. Robust bourbon list. Unique (and classic) food choices. Super attentive and friendly staff. Won’t be the least expensive meal you’ll ever have but definitely worth it. Great atmosphere. Love that you can see the kitchen. Highly recommend.

Have been to The Appalachian many times and they always meet the mark. Had ribeye yesterday and it was perfection, best I’ve had. All the staff are warm and welcoming, friendly and make you feel you are the most important customer. Highly recommend and will definitely see them again soon.

We went to The Appalachian today for our anniversary. Unfortunately we did not care for the food at all. The creamed corn was dry, wrinkled and way too garlicky. The mashed potatoes were overwhipped and had the texture of glue. We did send everything back and the kind manager removed everything from our bill except the drinks and app because they were fine. Although I would never be back due to poor food quality, the manager was very accommodating which is why I didn't leave a one star review.

Best in our area. Prime aged steaks and wonderful chef created locally sourced dishes. Prepare to open your wallet but it's worth it.

I wanted to share my disappointment with both the quality of the food and the response from management during our recent visit. Given the premium pricing of the steaks, we expected a much higher standard of preparation.
Unfortunately, each steak we ordered—from the ribeye to the filet was heavily charred on the outside, resulting in an overpowering burnt flavor. Additionally, the internal temperatures did not match our requested doneness. Specifically, the medium rare steaks were cold in the center, which is not consistent with proper preparation.
When we brought this to the staff’s attention and requested a correction, we were served replacement steaks that were prepared in the exact same manner—again, cold in the middle and overly charred on the outside.
We hope this feedback is taken seriously, as it reflects a significant gap between the dining experience offered and the expectations set by the pricing and reputation of the establishment.

Chicken skins were good and different. Our hanger steak was undercooked. We were so excited to go here so I think we overhyped in our head. I also think we should have ordered differently and maybe that would have helped. If I could go back in time I would have done the filet with mashed potatoes.
