First time visiting for a Birthday party . Really enjoyed.
Came here for Valentine’s Day and let’s just say McHugh Tea was a huge disappointment. The only pro is that their teas are very delicious and unique, that’s about it. However, there are many cons from the pricing, food, and service. We paid $55/person for below mediocre sandwiches and dessert. It took 20-25 minutes for the food/tea to arrive and we were not provided any water while we waited. The dessert tasted store-bought (even if it’s not) and the sandwiches taste like a child made them. Not to mention we found a piece of brown hair on one of the sandwiches. On top of that, we were charged a 20% auto-gratuity fee for two people when no service was provided despite us being the first ones there. It made sense as to why service was the way it was when there is a forced gratuity. Overall, I would not recommend and will never visit again.
- Disappointed and bamboozled -
This review is specific to the specialty Christmas tea offering.
We went this morning with young ones in tow for our first experience at McHugh’s.
We left feeling disappointed and bamboozled.
Be aware the listed price of “begins at $45” will actually set you back $55 per person for essentially a kids menu.
Both the food quantity as well as quality was absolutely not up to par for that price.
As the manager stated in a previous review response - that $55 price IS listed online, but you have to click three different places to find it.
Tucking it away like that is not transparent advertising.
AND despite what is stated on their website, no one confirmed this new price of $55 when we booked our reservation. It felt like a bait and switch to us.
The service, while friendly, was slow despite the restaurant being less than half full. We were never offered waters but saw other tables readily receiving them.
The “freshly baked scones” were falling apart and were not served with the advertised clotted cream and jam. Not even butter was offered.
The desserts, as you can see below are meager: Halved strawberries with icing piped on top. For $55?
We both felt bamboozled.
There is a reason no one else in the restaurant ordered the Christmas special.
It is noticeably meager compared to the regular tea and yet costs more money..?
When the quality and quantity of the food was brought to the attention of the manager she took an argumentative tone, stating everything was accurately listed on their website. The insinuation was that it was somehow our fault that we didn’t realize we were getting a kids menu for $55 pp.
Her tone and response were really inappropriate.
Buyer beware.
We will not be back.
This review is specifically for the CHRISTMAS AFTERNOON TEA. The website is not clear, it is $55/person even for children. The entire tea is more of a snack. VERY light tea. For the extra cost, you’d think they’d give you enough food for a meal. The quality of the sandwiches and desserts was terrible. Sandwiches were straight from a kid’s lunchbox- slab of ham, white bread, and cranberry jelly..then white bread, bell peppers, and 2 spinach leaves. Then some chopped up cat food on a cracker. Sure they were cute, but not worth the $55. The scones and pecan pie were the only things worth mentioning. The tea selection is great and customer service was friendly. But do NOT pay extra for the “special” tea service for Christmas. Total rip off. The regular afternoon tea looks great, sandwiches were full sized and desserts actually filled up the plate they were brought on. Our entire party felt ripped off for the price once we saw a table next to us with the regular afternoon tea.
Cute little spot.
I recently visited McHugh Tea Room & Gifts, and while my experience wasn’t perfect, I still enjoyed my time there. The tea selection was excellent, and the tea I ordered was delicious. The food was also pretty good—everything tasted fresh and well-prepared. However, the service was a bit slower than I expected. There were only two staff members working during my visit, and one of them was busy attending to a large party. It seemed like they were a bit understaffed that day, which may have contributed to the slower pace.
One thing I didn’t know beforehand was that you have to reserve their tea tray a day in advance. I had just discovered the place that day, so I didn’t have the opportunity to try it, which was a little disappointing. That said, I totally understood their policy, and it’s good to know for future visits.
Despite these small hiccups, I’d definitely come back to try them again. The tea and food were good enough to make me want to give it another shot, and I’m sure the staff was doing their best under the circumstances. It might have just been an off day, and I’m curious to see how they are on a fully-staffed day!
This place is so cute. I was disappointed when I came for my reservation because I didn’t get to choose which food package I wanted. I was told over the phone that I would make the selection at the restaurant. My waitress said that the manager was the one who took my rez but she never asked me which food package I wanted so she put us down for the traditional tea package which I didn’t want. I wanted the Halloween seasonal package. So be sure when making your rez you tell them which food package you want. I’ll be sure to do that when I come back which I will definitely be going back!
Lovely tea room experience. The staff was accommodating with a slight change to add more vegetarian food to the menu when we arrived. Both mothers and daughters in our group felt comfortable to chat without feeling that we needed to rush through our afternoon tea in order to accommodate the next group. Everyone there loved their pimento cheese tea sandwiches.
