Went there a few years back on a property/genealogy trip...I can't believe the reviews about the chicken fried steak. Worst piece of garbage I ever tried to eat...greasy, and tasteless, made with a tough poor quality cut of meat and sides were greasy and the green beans out of a can. We had leftovers and simply had to throw them away. I have eaten CFS for over 50 years and this was simply disgusting. I guess in this isolated part of Texas there just aren't many other options or people that recognize good food. This food is reflective of that completely blighted downtown.

From their burgers to their chicken fried chicken, home cooked food of the highest quality. The lettuce in the Cobb salad wasn't even thinking about going limp. Their fried jalapeños are mind blowingly delicious...and had us licking our fingers to get every last crumb. I can't recommend them highly enough.

The food is good and the staff is nice. It is a great place if you don’t mind waiting an hour for your food to come out. We placed take out order 45 minutes ahead of time during a non busy period… 1:30pm. We still had to wait an additional 20 minutes for our food to come out even though there were only 2 customers in the place. They said they were short staffed, but this has happened 3 times in a row over a period of 4 months. And, the order was simple. 2 sandwiches and some fries to go. We like to support restaurants in our small town, but we have lost our patience with this one. Service is painfully slow. The food is good, but not worth the wait. Two sandwiches and fries cost $30+!!!!

Use caution!!! Call to determine if they are open before driving to their cafe.July 2, 2023. Checked web site and it reflected Harcat was open until 7 PM. We drove from Palestine to Elkhart, arriving at 4 PM. A sign on the door reflected they closed at 3 PM. Very very irritating!!But on the flip side, their food is plentiful and great, IF you can catch them when they are open.

Food is VERY good, just don't go if you are in a hurry cause they cook everything fresh so you will be waiting but it will be worth every second.

We got 3 fried catfish plates to go. I'm not sure what they used to batter the fish but it was over cooked and hard. There was a pocket of air between the fish and the batter. The fries were thin and full of grease. The coleslaw was swimming in dressing. I must saw the pinto beans were good though. I picked our food up around 6:40 and by the time we had tried to eat our food and I decided to give them a call they were already closed. At least noone answered the phone. I'm very disappointed in what we received tonight. We had gotten the catfish a few weeks ago and were very pleased with it. Maybe a new cook...I don't know. I will try calling again tomorrow to voice my complaint as the food was mostly inedible.

Ate here over the weekend for probably the 3rd or 4th time. It's always delicious each time. Steak finger basket this time was the best. Keep up the good work and BTW you never leave hungry.
Awesome food and a family atmosphere. Would recommend to everyone within 250 miles or even worth the drive if you are further away. AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME.

Best diner!!!! Biggest and best chicken fried steak I've ever had. Everything we had was amazing. Fried onion rings, fried pickles. Portions big enough to share, definitely coming back to try the other items. All the food looked amazing. ?? Can't wait to have something else from here....it is family owned and operated and it shows can't wait to tell others...... We had chicken fried steak with two sides. Portions are huge! Everything was taste and looked good!I would suggest the owners to make the name of the place more visible for the visitors out of town.
