Wines were amazing and Mary was very knowledgeable and great with walking us through the tasting. I’ll be back!
Calais Winery is the Sleeper of wineries. We are glad we made Calais our first ever wine tasting in Texas Hill Country. Excellent experience! Tremedous red wines! Wine making is the main priority and it shows. Benjamin Calais is talanted, likeable and humble. Our case of Allocation wines arrived this week and we are excited to enjoy them.
Calais Winery is hands-down the best in Texas! As an Aussie wine lover, I was blown away—the wines are absolutely exceptional. The French winemaker is not only incredibly talented but also genuinely passionate, and he spent time chatting with us during the tasting. The host was equally fantastic—so friendly and welcoming. Amazing wines, great tasting experience—an absolute must-visit!
Did the cave tasting with my GF. Great experience overall and some of the best wines in Texas. The ONE minor, and its a very minor nit is I wished they had offered us water between tastings. That would have made it 100/100. As it is, our experience was 95/100
We did the cab sauv experience and really enjoyed it. We will refer our family and friends to this place. We love visiting Napa and this place was the only place that comes close to the Napa cabs we’ve tried. 10/10 experience.
I’m a huge wine snob, but also a life long Texan. Calais is the first winery that I tasted Cab Sauv at that held up to Napa. Most other Texas Cab Sauv feels very watered down and too fruit forward. Not Ben’s wine. Take the time and do the Cab Sauv experience tasting, you won’t be disappointed. We took home a case at the end and are already drinking a bottle at home and have zero remorse! Don’t sleep on this great winery!
A Hidden Gem Beneath the Hill Country Sky If you’re looking for an unforgettable wine experience in Texas, stop scrolling and add Calais Winery in Hye, TX to your must-visit list. Tucked into the side of a limestone hill, this boutique winery offers an intimate cave tasting experience that feels like stepping into a secret—the kind of place you only whisper about to friends you trust to appreciate something rare. French winemaker Benjamin Calais has crafted something extraordinary here. His wines, made exclusively from 100% Texas-grown grapes, are Bordeaux-inspired yet distinctly Texan—elegant, complex, and soulful. Every sip tells a story of sunlit vineyards, native yeasts, Hill Country water, and a winemaker’s devotion to excellence. Tastings are by appointment only, which means you’re never part of a crowd—just part of the moment. We sat at a table fashioned from reclaimed barn wood, surrounded by barrels and stone, and shared an hour of good wine and even better conversation. It was as if time slowed down just for us. Whether you’re a seasoned oenophile or a weekend wanderer, Calais Winery is a revelation. The cave. The craftsmanship. The calm. This is what wine tasting should be—intimate, authentic, and deeply rooted in the land. Bravo, Benjamin. You’ve bottled something magical.
A touch of France in the Texas hill country. Absolutely amazing wines. The staff is well informed. It is definitely worth a visit.
Small production winery open for scheduled tastings and purchases.
Tastings are by appointment only - NO EXCEPTIONS!
The cave is a dugout with a roof.

Calais winery is one of our favorite stops on the 290 Wine Trail along with French Connection. The tastings in the wine cave are always fantastic. We had no idea this quality of wine could be produced from Texas grapes. The wine maker Ben is truly masterful. The staff goes above and beyond to ensure you have a great experience. If you love bold Bordeaux style wines and a friendly atmosphere this is a must stop for you.
We were intrigued about Calais when James Suckling rated their cab 96 points. And their wines did not disappoint. Their Bordeaux style yields smooth, refined texture with elegant, complex floral notes and vibrant flavors.
This place was recommended by another Somm in OR.
Beautiful wines and the passion shows through.
Definitely recommend making a reservation.
Highly likely to return!
A must stop to try the best of Texas wines!
Fantastic experience
