I recently had the opportunity to dine at Hidalgo Tex Mex Store, a small restaurant located next to a tire shop with which it shares a building. Both the restaurant and the tire shop appear to be family-owned, which gives the establishment a quaint, local charm.
I have frequented the tire shop on several occasions, and I must commend the staff for their excellent service and care when it comes to fixing tires. They are always attentive and efficient, ensuring a pleasant experience whenever I need tire services.
However, my recent visit to the restaurant side of Hidalgo Tex Mex Store was somewhat disappointing. Upon entering, we noticed that the restaurant does not serve chips or salsa, a staple at many Tex Mex establishments. Additionally, rather than having our orders taken at the table, we were required to order at the front, which detracted from the dining experience.
The menu offered limited options for enchilada sauces, with only queso and chili sauce available. Unfortunately, the cheese was extremely heavy and thick, making it quite difficult to chew. The beans were passable but did not stand out in terms of flavor. Moreover, the rice was notably bland and lacked any distinct taste.
A particularly inconvenient aspect of our visit was the beverage situation. Drinks were not served to us; instead, we were directed to the fridges at the front of the restaurant, which also doubles as a small store. While the variety of Mexican drink options was a plus, the self-service approach felt disjointed.
The atmosphere of the restaurant was another area that fell short. It was extremely hot, and we noticed that the air conditioning unit near our booth was unplugged, with the cord wrapped around it, presumably to make room for a freezer situated behind our seating area. This made for an uncomfortable dining experience as we were sweating throughout our meal. The layout of the restaurant includes only a few tables and a single booth against the wall, which unfortunately does not benefit from the AC.
Service was also lacking during our visit. The girl who attended to us was not as polite as expected and was often missing, presumably in the kitchen. This made it difficult to ask questions or request assistance, as no staff members were available in the dining area.
In conclusion, while I strongly recommend Hidalgo Tex Mex Store for tire services due to their excellent care and attention, I cannot recommend the restaurant portion of the business. The food quality, atmosphere, and service left much to be desired. Despite my intention to support a small, family-owned business, my dining experience at Hidalgo Tex Mex Store did not meet expectations. However, the tire shop remains a reliable choice for automotive needs, and the selection of Mexican beverages in the store is commendable.

Stopped in today while camping nearby and we had enchiladas. The first thing is the place is dimly lit and we should have reconsidered since we were their only customers at lunch time. We ordered enchiladas; one plate of beef and one plate of chicken. Beef enchiladas were cold and it was clear both meats were previously cooked and just reheated some. No chips and salsa served, self serve tea which was bitter. Really wanted it to be good but just wasnt.

They have zero selection. It's too dark inside. They also close unexpectedly or before the closing time two times in the past that I've gone.
It’s a great little store, just stuck in between towns, on a highway, wish they had gas, but they have the best burgers around, plus it’s convenient to be able to call in an order and go pick up, prices are a little high; but the cost of living goes up daily
Kid-friendliness: My 9 year old is learning money management I guess you could say, so he loves ordering his own food and being able to walk in and get it himself with his allowance, they are never rude and help him with his purchases

Didn't go to the restaurant, went to the tire shop next door. Due to time constraints, I left 2 lawn tractor tires with instructions to install innertubes. Agreed upon price was $20. When I returned the the price was increased to $30 . Partly due to him putting in "boots" in the tires. I didn't need "boots" and innertubes both......

I paid owner of the store $90.00 to come to my house less than 5 miles away to change a tire(*note I already had a new tire waiting for him there) Nothing more than taking the tire off and putting it back on. This morning I wake up with a flat on the same tire and the owner of the store tried to tell me it was my tire. Upon inspection the valve stem was messed up so I explain this and he swears that’s just not possible. I ask if the tire was checked with water and installing and he stated it was not. Meaning he took my money did not check the quality of his work and still chooses to not refund me. I have lived in this small area my entire life and I expected better treatment. TAKE YOUR MONEY ELSEWHERE!!!
