OMG GIRLLLL! Saw the billboard on 59 while on our way to Port Lavaca. We decided to stop by on our way back to Houston and we are so glad we did! I ordered the fried chicken, mac & cheese, and greens. My friend got the fried pork chops, mashed potatoes, and mac & cheese. Both chicken & chops were fried to order so the were nice and fresh. Everything and I mean everything was fresh and perfectly seasoned. The cornbread was sweet(as it should be) and their kool-aid was on point. The peach cobbler was to amazing. Great friendly people (customers and staff), good conversation, and an excellent meal. We definitely will be stopping by whenever we are heading to South Texas. Absolutely recommend!

We happened upon Evelyn’s driving through Texas and I’m so glad we did! We were greeted with smiling faces and great vibes walking in. We asked a woman who was sitting and enjoying a meal with her grandchildren what she having and she recommended the pork chops. She was funny and sweet; we’d later come to realize she was the owner Evelyn.
We ended sitting down and literally trying every dish they had; greens, yams, chitterlings, ox tails, fried and smothered pork chops, smothered steak, okra, black eyed peas and mash potatoes & rice and gravy. Oh and the turkey necks, omg, so dang good!! Everything was so well seasoned, it was like having a Thanksgiving meal on a random Sunday. There wasn’t a single dish that wasn’t absolutely delicious! Oh and the cornbread was spot on!!
I really wish this place was closer, we felt like we were family sitting down for dinner. Evelyn and her daughter Kiki were gracious and hospitable, they felt like a bit of home away from home.

My co worker was having dinner here while we were on the phone and he said man you have got to come try the food it’s delicious. So I said okay I’ll give it a try and let me tell you the food was delicious and they did not disappoint I had the smothered steak and turkey necks with black eyed peas and the greens and cornbread Talk about tender and well seasoned. So when I come through town I will be stopping by every chance I get.

Yall. If I had to choose my last meal on this earth, it would be from Mrs. Evelyn’s. Just stopped in after finding her place on Google. I wanted something home-cooked while passing through Wharton on a long road trip. I ordered the smothered pork chops with Black Eyed Peas and Cabbage for my sides. I also ordered a mac and cheese for my daughter. Everything is phenomenal. Meat falls off the bone with no need for a knife. Flavor is incredible, with a deliciously salty and very slight spice to the gravy, the perfect buttery richness to the black eyed peas, and cabbage that melts in your mouth. The macaroni and cheese was also delicious. You will not need salt and pepper, everything is perfectly seasoned. Not to mention, the place is extremely clean and well taken care of. To top it all off, all are welcomed with a warm greeting and Mrs. Evelyn makes sure you enjoy your meal first before paying. Please stop in if you want a real treat, you won’t regret it!
Evelyn’s Soul Food blew us away. This was our first visit, and from the moment we walked in, we were treated like family. We had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Evelyn herself and her lovely granddaughter. Seeing them work side by side in their little family business was truly special.
The food… my goodness. Absolutely delicious, perfectly seasoned, and the portions were huge. We enjoyed every bite of our meals and still couldn’t resist ordering even more to take home.

Love this place and the staff. Friendly and felt like family at Sunday dinner. Greeted with smiles upon entering. I like that they cook ya food upon request as it's not sitting under heat lamp. Had the oxtail and fried chicken. With Mac n cheese, yams, and mash potatoes. This was two different plates btw. Yea I seen the ad billboard then a coworker told me about this place so I checked it out as I was traveling through to Houston and it's a staple that I hope is around for a long time. The peach cobbler was also good. I'm use to mikki but I can get a great meal without the extra miles on my route as we usually stop in buccees. Lol
