I've been meaning to give them a try, but usually found myself in Culpeper on Sundays. We finally had a chance to stop in since I've been meaning to try a ham biscuit.
There's not a lot in the store, but obviously the focus is the ham. They have some premade, wrapped ham biscuits. We got a couple to go. I was pleasantly surprised. I've heard about how the country ham can be overly salty. This was a nice, little sandwich. They slice the ham at a good thickness where it's got a bite, but isn't chewy. It's also salty without being too overwhelming. The three stars are just that I'd like to explore some more of their options. A ham bone for soup or beans is definitely in my future.
Best country ham in Virginia! Whole/half hams are wonderful, his method of curing is most like my grandparents used to make. The sliced country ham from the store counter is perfect for ham biscuits if you don’t need a whole ham. We always buy it by the pound, sliced into those paper thin slices that are perfect for biscuits. It may be more expensive but it’s worth every penny, no waste at all! I’m not sure who raises the pigs but they are top notch too, very little fat! It’s a staple for our families holiday dinners and worth the 80 mile drive to get it! It’s a family business so call to verify the hours before you go, life happens and things change so we always check first!
We stopped for a quick lunch. The chicken salad was ok but they were out of lettuce and only had white or wheat bread. For a deli at lunchtime it was pretty disappointing. Limited drink and chip options but the store next door has a wide variety.
Checked website, said open, drove 25 miles to get some sausage and ham bisquits ,only to find the place closed…Third time…I will not try any more…
Been buying ham from this place since the Hudson Ham House was here. Calhoun’s is the best hams I ever bought and the people are great.
