I had the best Indonesian cuisine I ever had at Boboko Indonesian Cafe in Harrisonburg, Virginia. It’s a small 6 table Indonesian restaurant right in the heart of the Harrisonburg historic district. There is a very convenient large municipal parking lot right across the street and the restaurant is ramp accessible for people with walkers or in wheel chairs. As soon as you walk in your nose will be filled with the pleasant smell of Indonesian spices. It smelled so good when I walked in, I knew the food was going to be amazing. Our server Artie and the head chef were talkative and friendly. The spiced sesame salmon is marinated overnight in sesame oil, ginger and garlic. The flavors from this marinade penetrated all of the meat and produce flavor in every bite. It is blackened to perfection with a soft flaky interior. The chicken rendang is in a wonderfully spiced (but not spicy) Indonesian style coconut curry. It’s not a heavy oily curry yet it’s very flavorful. The Indonesian hot sauce that Artie offered me was superb. A perfect balance between spicyness and flavor. I’d say it’s 6 out of 10 on the spicyness scale and it paired perfectly with the chicken rendang and the salmon. The veggies were well spiced but not spicy and cooked just right, not too soft and not too hard. The dessert was out of this freaking world. I thought it would be when I saw banana Nutella dessert spring rolls. I got it with coconut ice cream instead of the vanilla ice cream. I don’t think I can put how good it was into words but I’ll try. It’s a perfectly fried spring roll, crunchy but not oily. First you get that wonderful crunch then your mouth feels soft fried sweet banana and Nutella chocolate hazelnut spread which is just melted all over the banana inside the spring roll. It’s a perfect flavor and texture combination. The coconut palm sugar sauce on top adds a little bit more sweetness and makes for a nice presentation. The warm spring rolls pair nicely with the cold coconut ice cream. The whole thing was simply amazing and not overly sweet which I don’t like in my desserts but definitely sweet enough for those with a sweet tooth. The food, the ambiance and the customer service was superb. If you are ever anywhere near Harrisonburg, Virginia, I highly recommend going to Boboko. 10/10

Rather disappointed with my Kale Salad (meal portion): too little, too bland, too simple and too dry, even after the extra portion of sauce. This is NOT a meal...

Great Indonesian restaurant! I got the fried noodles with chicken, and the sambal sauce. I really enjoyed the flavor! My husband got the beef rendang. I thought it was very very tender, but was lacking some flavor. We also got the chicken satay and the fusion spring rolls and they were good. The vegan coffee was so delicious!! Our server was really friendly and helpful. Really appreciate that they have a good selection of vegan options!!!

Vegan Indonesian food is my absolute favorite. This place was adequate at best. The tempeh was not adequately steamed, seasoned or prepared. The curry sauce was bland. I’d say if there were no other vegan options in town, go for it. Otherwise, I’d keep looking.

the rating/stars are irrelevant because i didn't actually eat here or order from here and this is why:i was very excited to try the Chicken Soup everyone in the reviews has been raving about. i called the restaurant and they informed me a 16 oz. soup costs $10. most places give you a 32 oz. soup for the same price even good Thai restaurants in Harrisonburg.i can't afford to spend $10+tax on a 16 oz. soup, otherwise, i would have loved to try it. the rest of the menu is very expensive , even charging $6+ for veggie rolls. if you guys can bring down the price to make it accessible for the area, i will try it. i've never seen so many trailer parks in one town, so pricing the menu as such given this demographic is absolutely wrong.

Wonderful to have a restaurant with plenty of vegetarian options. I had to say at least one nice thing because I do appreciate that. Not at all an Indonesias restaurant, though. Greasy, tasteless, even the sambal was entirely without character. I lived in Indonesia for years, as well as many other countries, and am so sorry to see the food misrepresented so grossly. Every dish tasted the same- like oil and Chinese five spice, not even a hint of actual Indonesian flavors. Real Indonesian food is truly the most delicious food on Earth!!! So sad. No reason to return. I will go for Chinese next time, at least it will taste good.
