Great food! The service changed since last time we visited - need to order from the table on your phone (QR code) and everything is delivered in take-out boxes (no plates)

I use to come here all the time it was great. I went in yesterday (pretty easy process) but they brought out the wrong food to me and when I did get my food it was not the same. food quality went down so much. It is no longer enjoyable. the “beef bulgogi” looked like shredded pieces of garbage.
I also don’t understand why there are no servers but still have people dine in. Having to order myself and get my own drink and still be expected to tip on top for what?

I used to live in Harrisonburg and loved mashita when I was there. I was traveling thru and decided to stop to enjoy their delicious food again. The new business model is extremely impersonal as no one explained anything, and if I am dining in I really don’t appreciate eating from a plastic box. Everything is self serve even the drinks but no one tells you that. We had a lot of confusion. The food was good, but I would prefer to pay a bit more for actual dining service than to be treated like I’m an inconvenience eating from a food truck. And what really got me was the ask for a tip when paying. A tip for what? There’s no service to tip for, I’m doing all the work myself. I have read other reviews and the extremely unprofessional ways the owner responds to people, I will not be revisiting when I come to Harrisonburg. There were 0 customers in there besides us at prime dinner time, when the place used to always have people. I think you should listen to the feedback from your patrons and reevaluate your business model.

I am unfortunately echoing other reviewers regarding the new business model. This has been one of my favorite restaurants in Harrisonburg and some of my favorite food in the state since the early food truck days, but now everything about it is sub-par under the new structure, to the point that I questioned if it was even a new owner.

The whole restaurant is modeled as “grab and go,” which really makes the majority of the restaurant itself unnecessary. Why expand, only to implement a model that encourages people to leave quickly? It’s impersonal and disappointing.

Unfortunately the food found the same fate through this restaurant “revamp.” It was bland at best and had probably been sitting in the kitchen for a while, much like the hot bar buffet up front. The servings for our meals were noticeably smaller, and flavor-wise they were a shadow of their former selves. Don’t get me wrong; I think the hot bar option is an extremely useful and clever approach to cater to the office workers nearby, but doing so at the expense of ALL service and deliciousness of the food is not a feasible longterm solution.

Ironically, these decisions were supposed to generate more in terms of profit, but have instead cost Mashita all of my family’s future business. Unless some middle-ground model can be found, we can’t justify paying for such a mediocre meal - and it breaks our hearts to write that!

(Also, for the record: my go-to meal is the braised chicken buns priced at $18. I’d rather pay $25 for more food, leftovers, table service, and a cozy environment, than $18 for whatever it was I just experienced. Raise prices if you must, but please don’t compromise quality or community, especially not in a city like Harrisonburg, which is well-known for both.)

This place is not Korean, it is Asian fusion and there is a VERY big difference.

Mashitas food is very good but they have lost the character and customer service since essentially turning into a carry out place that you can eat in. You now eat out of a plastic container with plastic tableware you have to get up and find elsewhere in the restaurant. This service platform left me frustrated and dissatisfied for a dining establishment that previously had been a nice restaurant to visit.

Was our favorite place to eat for years, when visiting Harrisonburg. Walked in tonight. No servers. Everything is done by the patrons, by scanning the code and ordering online. We saw people coming to their table with bags of take out boxes! We walked out. Never going back.

I love the changes Mashita has made! Self serve ordering makes my life easier and served to-go means I don't have to wait for a server to get my food boxed up!
I didn't get the buffet but every thing looked fresh and people were there to help!

Mashita was great! Stopped by from out-of-town with my MIL when we were looking for a relatively quick lunch. The service kiosk process surprised us at first but ended up being easy enough. We each got the bibimbap with braised pork, which was sooo delicious and came in a very generous portion. We got the chance to meet the chef and owner Mikey as well, who was super friendly and engaging to talk with. Really glad we stopped by and would definitely come back again! Great food, casual atmosphere, def a business I’m more than happy to support.

We had a great experience at Mashita this evening with a large group including 6 young kids. The new service model works great for families and the quality of food is still top notch. 👌🏼

I tried the hot bar today and it did not disappoint! I love the new cafeteria style service. The hot bar allowed me to try several different items, for the same price for what would have been 1 entree.

Absolutely delicious food, no doubt. However, the new system that they're still working out isn't quite there yet. It's essentially operating as a take-out only place, but you can then go sit at a table. Instead of one QR code that's hard to get to, there should be a QR code at every table. There also wasn't a bar menu, despite the extensive bar area. Whether you take out or dine in, you get your food in black plastic containers, which aren't even compostable/eco! The food is great enough that it deserves plates, even if they were also disposable. I understand that the restaurant has been hit hard by tariffs/the economy....and we appreciate what the friendly owner is doing to help the place survive in a college town. Amazing flavors all around, from Chicken Katsu to the Korean cheese corn dip and the arancini. We hope they can continue to sort out their system. Maybe a food truck or small takeout window could also be in their future.

My husband and I were driving through and found this place on google.. pictures were nice. Looked like a cozy atmosphere with food served on plates. Well, when we got there the hostess explained they have a new service model. Order your food on a kiosk the food brought out in to go boxes. Maybe because its in a college town? Food was ok but atmosphere felt like we were eating in somebody's garage. No servers, bartender or any staff around. Be aware.. photos of plated food are very misleading.
