Steak 'n Shake

D-Hall is a student cafeteria on the JMU campus with amazing food. It has indoor and outdoor seating. There is also a food court below that has other paid options like Chick-fil-A and Steak ‘n Shake.

It’s an okay place for meals for JMU students, especially late at night. Food is decent. Sometimes service could be better. One time I ordered a hot dog through the starship app and instead of, you know, a hot dog, I got a pair of hamburger buns with a hot dog in it, and that was all. Not even the condiments I asked for or anything. At least I got fries too. How do you even mess this up?! I figure they ran out of hot dog buns, but they could’ve just canceled my order instead of trying to make an atrocity out of my order. Seriously, what went through the workers’ minds that time because there’s no way you get an order for a hot dog, notice there’s no buns left, and think the next logical thing to do is just make it anyway but put it in hamburger buns. Literally the most cursed food ever, you can’t even eat it properly. I would’ve been fine if my order was canceled, and I would’ve then ordered an actual hamburger instead lol.

The dining space felt spacious.

We stopped in while visiting friends recently. We tried their signature burgers, fries, shakes. All excellent. I hope that they expand their locations.

Tbh every steak and shake is pretty garbage, so if you’re thinking of getting a decent burger; just about anywhere else has better burgers for better prices for their value. Go to chilis for better everything including price. This place sucks.

I would leave zero stars if I could. There is no real information about this restaurant on maps. We drove 2 hours because that's where my son wanted to eat for his birthday. There's no number to call to check hours of operation or else we would have driven to Huntington WV instead. I'm severely disappointed that we were unable to fulfill his wish of eating at Steak n Shake for his birthday dinner. If you don't live on campus don't bother.

Change your hours to be accurate. I’m from NY was looking forward to a garlic steak burger and it was closed even tho it said open at 11 on Sunday. Fix that.

I visited Steak n Shake on campus this evening. The food came out hot and it was very good. Ordered a banana milkshake with a cherry and whip creme which was delicious.

I love the food, but I’ve gotten a Frisco melt without the Frisco on it twice now.
