Probably one of the worst meals I've ever had. My girlfriend ordered the shrimp scampi. The shrimp were like eating rubber. Exceptionally overcooked. The creamed corn had so much sugar in it you couldn't finish it. The potato dumplings were stone cold, that's when we found out they cook by microwave. I ordered the Jager Schnitzel but was given Weiner Schnitzel. Either way it tasted blah and was as tough as shoe leather. The red cabbage was as sweet as the corn and tasted like 7-up. The spaetzle tasted like rubber bands. They guy in the kitchen is no chef but as long as he has a microwave he'll be in there ruining food. I had high hopes and several recommendations for this place but it was beyond awful. If you're interested they take reservation, why I can't imagine.
The Bavarian Chef is a gem in Madison County! Very good food, atmosphere and service. Loved it!
My husband and I have been dining at the Bavarian Chef for nearly 25 years and have never been disappointed! Food and service are both SUPERB! I say this as a picky eater…and we drive nearly three hours to get there at least a couple times every year! We had dinner today, 2/15/2025 and discovered something we hadn’t known - its opening anniversary is on my birthday, which makes it even more special to us. I understand that a book was published some years ago, and I am determined to find a copy so that I can have it signed by the wonderful staff, cooks, servers, the whole team that creates such a wonderful experience! If anyone knows where a copy can be obtained, please let us know somehow! Thanks to ALL y’all at the Bavarian Chef!
Great food and generous portions.

This is a great place to go for special occasions. It's pricey, but it's worth it.

Fun theming and atmosphere, and a good restaurant over all! Sides and entrees were delicious. The portion sizes were ENORMOUS: none of us finished our entrees, and we had leftovers for days. I cannot overstate how big the portions are. We called ahead and got the baked Alaska, and unfortunately that's what is keeping this from five stars - it was really quite bad. The marshmallow/meringue layer was sickly sweet, the cake was bland and dense, and the ice cream was flavorless. Everything else, though, was incredible: my schnitzel was crispy and perfectly cooked, all the sides were perfect, and everything had really interesting and well balanced sauces. Skip the baked Alaska and you'll have a great experience

The food is amazing here. I'm a celiac and it's hard to find gluten free German food. About half of the menu is. The pretzels looked amazing. Wish I could have tried them!
The wait staff is attentive and the gentleman that artistically sets the table like he's in the circus was fun to watch.
Dietary restrictions: Safe gluten free choices.

The food was okay. Every side dish was too sweet to eat. Considering the high cost for a mediocre meal, one would expect a little more from the ambiance. Every aspect of the dining area is a mess. The ceiling tiles are all covered with yuck in spiderwebs and stains. Paint is literally falling from the walls. Every bit of curtains or anything cloth is covered with Dusty cobwebs as well. We had a corner table, lots of dead bugs on the floor in the corner. Those can usually get sucked up with the vacuum. My end assessment is that the owner cares more for profits than cleanliness. This restaurant has been around a long time, I hope they can clean it up.

This place is a YES! the food is amazing.
Great service. Nice atmosphere. Good selection of beers complementing the food. Portions were generous. Specials of the day sounded interesting.
My wife enjoyed the Huhnerbrutschen Baden Baden. I had the Rheinischer Sauerbraten, but was disappointed. Most of it was dry and tough, not tender. The creamed corn was good. The glazed carrots actually weren't glazed. They were baby carrots swimming in a bowl full of sweet sauce. The carrot cake was maybe a 3.5 out of 5.
Prices for all of this were pretty high. If the quality had been great across the board, I would have been fine with it. But i can't say that my meal was worth it.
Fun place and great service were let down by inconsistent food quality. Maybe with some different choices from the menu ...

Authentic and delicious German food served in a friendly environment. We went on a weekend night and it was crowded and loud. Lots of happy people. Be sure to make a reservation so you don't miss out!

Lovely ambience, food perfect. Servings huge, so you may want to share. The house salad with their Dijon salad dressing was like a song! Schnitzels, wine—all divine.

A piece of Germany in Virginia. The schnitzel is delicious with servings enough for two. Great service.

Pros: vibe! Atmosphere is cozy and cute, I can imagine Oktoberfest would be so fun! German entrees were really good!
Warning: go hungry! The portions are insanely large, prepare to share or go on an empty stomach.
Cons: price - not worth the price, entrees are good but the sides looked and tasted like they came from cans and not in a good way. Do not get the green beans or cabbage - both were simultaneously over done and chewy. The spaetzle was good. The mash was fine. But not worth the $30 per entree price. Service was fine but nothing to write home about.
