Above Ground Winery is our favorite place to enjoy great wine. The Karma, Pinot Noir, Vintners Select and Little Black Cab are wonderful reds! For the whites, the 2024 Exit Strategy is a beautiful Chardonnay and for something lightly sweet and crisp, the Daydream riesling is amazing. Their wines make great travel companions, but enjoying them at the winery is the best. A great place to hang out with friends and meet new ones.

We love the small wineries. This place was small & really nice. Wines were good. Wild Turkey barreled Chardonnay (Abracadabra) & smokey red blend (Revival) were amazing. They had an interesting Riesling/apple wine (Dividing Ridge) that was good. Owner/winemaker did our tasting. He was wonderful. Highly recommend!

Fantastic, delightful, fun, and educational—the interaction with Matt during the wine-tasting experience over the weekend. Next are the wines across the board. There is a wonderful range of whites to reds and a few desert wines, too. It was awesome. This is a hidden gem that should not be overlooked if you are seeking excellent Virginia wine. Beyond the conversation, the wines shined. We will be back to enjoy more in the near future.

This is the epitome of the Virginia wine scene - a beautiful rural location, solid wine, friendly owners who are usually in the tasting room, generous tastings at the counter (and not only the flights at a table that so many Virginia wineries are doing now, which totally removes the interaction with the staff and/or owners...if I want to do a flight of wine, I'll just go to a restaurant), and cats. Above Ground used to have a small tasting room in Purcellville, VA (Loudoun county) but moved to Augusta county, between Staunton and Lexington, several years ago. It's the way Virginia wineries used to be, before the food law changed and the word got out, and so many once intimate and whimsical wineries became slick places (I'm talking to you, Flying Fox Winery). Anyway I digress - luckily we will always have places like Above Ground around. The only negative (and I stress "only") is that it's rather hard to find. Smart phone signals don't work especially well in this part of VA (at least my provider...) and we had to resort to an old fashioned map. The signage leading to the winery could be better.
One of favorite boutique vineyards in the Valley. Great wines, family friendly property, friendly hands on owners... Well worth the drive!
