The food is great!! The people are amazing!!đ»
We were seated and waited endlessly for the waitress to bring our order. I ordered the Cesar salad with chicken. It was thee worse Caesar salad I ever tasted. The bowl was filled with old dark green soggy bitter lettuce. It was soupy and soggy with huge amount of garlic to disguise the taste. The chicken was tiny strips of recooked very hard stale chicken. Needless to say I could not eat it. The waitress never came back only to give me a $22 dollar bill for only that small stale bowl of stale everything! When I politely told her why I could not eat it and was shocked at the price, she walked away after collecting our money!! Please spare yourself a horrible experience and go somewhere else!

Only come here if you are okay with supporting animal abusers.
The owner was arrested for animal cruelty after throwing boiling hot water on a stray cat in front of his employees in January of 2021. You can look it up on Reddit and local court records.
My family used to come here, but stopped after that. The food is mid, anyway.
We stopped in relatively early in the evening. The place was pretty busy but, our server was great. The food was âmehâ but, it wasnât overly expensive and we didnât have high expectations to start with so, no reason to complain. There was nothing specifically wrong with the actual business, itâs just most of the clientele were completely hammered. Drunken cackling, stumbling dancers, slurred âbut I love yousâ, etc. There were a couple of guys playing guitar and one was singing and they had their amps turned up way too loud which caused a lot of distortion. I have no idea if they were talented or not because you couldnât make out anything other than noise. I had to yell at my wife sitting next to me and the server had to use hand gestures to take our order. There were people vaping around us and none of the staff seemed to care. We were hoping for a nice meal and ambiance but, it was like going to the local dive bar at 2am but this was about 8pm. Maybe theyâre better at lunch but, if youâre looking for a nice, quiet dinner, this isnât the place and the âkid friendlyâ recommendations are pretty questionable.

Had some pretty darn good food. Fish & chips were very good, and the spicy chicken sandwich was scrumptious. Beer was ice-cold, too!
Yet, the service was the best. Elijah, our server, was the most courteous and effective guy ever! Will likely return in the future.
Baked potato was luke warm. Bathrooms were a mess

The fish and chips were amazing. Big portions and super tasty. The coleslaw is one of the best I've ever had. Small town tavern with big flavor!

Erich and Scott's reviews from 5 and 7 days ago absolutely accurate. How can the fries be both soggy and take forever to come out? Long wait for very poor food.

When in RomeâŠâŠ..tolerate cold fries, slow service and empty glasses and cigarettes wafting through the air. I understand that restaurant choices are slimâŠ. But come on guys⊠you can do better. Or can you? Weâd been probably better off and money ahead going up to the grocery store and buying all the fixings for whatever sandwich and tailgating rather than falling for the allure of convenience that the Tavern on the James provided. Neat looking placeâŠ..just needs to come together. Summerâs almost over!!!!!

This establishment offers a delightful experience for everyone to enjoy. The food, prepared in the American style, is absolutely delicious and satisfying. You will find that the prices are very reasonable, making it an excellent value. There is seating both indoors and outdoors, allowing you to choose your preferred ambiance. The inclusion of a fun bar enhances the overall experience, perfect for socializing. It is a great spot to unwind and create lasting memories with friends or family. The combination of the food, environment, and bar makes it a really attractive location. This place is indeed a fantastic choice for a great time.

Great ambience of the 200+ year old building. Good food at reasonable prices. If you can get Elijah for your server, youre in for a fantastic experience.

Objectively the worst dining experience I've had in years. Definitely top five of a long life. If you are a local and looking to get drunk and smoke cigarettes this place is for you I guess. Everybody else should pass.
Every aspect was one star. No napkins, no utensils,, no water, dirty menus, ashtray on our table with old cigarettes in it, the uneaten food on the table next to us sat there the whole time we were there covered in flies, having to ask someone to take our drink orders, having to ask again for them to take our food orders, having 20 people smoking ten feet from your table, waiting 45 minutes for a burger and sandwich, mediocre food and then waiting again to get your check after asking three times.
Many people that live in Scottsville I know had said this place is bad. I thought it can't be that bad. We had a lot of time waiting to watch people leave. Nobody looked happy except the bar flies who came out to smoke.
