The view was great, but the beer and staff were not. I don't know if I came on an off day, but I received an attitude from both staff members working the bar when I asked if they had flights and if they had any soft drinks. We did not respond badly when they said no which I think suprised them. We just said okay and ordered a beer. I don't know if they had a bad day or just get tired of answering the same questions, but these are normal questions to ask. On top of that, the beer tasted like it had gone bad. I left 2 stars instead of one because I loved the view and may have just caught the staff on a bad day.

Absolutely incredible drinks, food, and views.

Amazing authentic Belgian style lambic and gueze brewery. Most beers and cider are on the tart or sour side - but traditional Belgian rather than most US sours that skirt being vinegar. I was there for the 10 year anniversary and was lucky enough to try a few aged and collaborations they opened for the event - all were amazing. It reminded me of Cantillon or 3 Fontein at their best.

Food was also incredible- not at all what you would expect. There is a clear focus on quality ingredients and flavors. I got a bit of the raw tuna on fresh tomato and the peach cobbler. Both were superficially simple but with layers of complexity and deliciousness - just like the beers!

There’s a reason Pen Druid was the highlight of our trip. Nestled on a 27‑acre permaculture farm at the foot of the Blue Ridge, it’s all native‑yeast, barrel‑fermented, spontaneous beers made using a wood‑fired brew system—no gas or electric. Wort is cooled in outdoor copper-lined coolships and fermented entirely on local microbes. Remarkably, they brew outdoors year‑round and their clean beers all use a native yeast isolated from a winter flower in 2015.

The standout beer of the visit was the Spontaneous Raspberry wild ale. Tart, lively, and bursting with raspberry, it exemplifies Pen Druid’s mastery of lambic‑style brewing.

The grounds are stunning—rolling pastures, mountain views, and spaced‑out picnic tables. When the weather turns, there’s a spacious indoor taproom to retreat to.

Note: they’re only open weekends, so plan your visit accordingly. Highly recommended if you appreciate wild brewing at its most authentic.

We had a wonderful time taking in the beautiful view and trying a few of their ciders, the IPA, and the orange wine. Everything was delicious and I would definitely visit again. Unfortunately, the Sumac restaurant was closed, but the menu looked enticing.

Sumac and Pen druid are true gems. We can't help but to keep coming back and falling in love over and over. If there is only time for one stop in sperryvile, this should be it!

Delicious beverages, a chilled vibe, and a nice view make this a great spot for a post hike beer. Recommend bringing your own food if you’re post-hike hungry though - the neighboring restaurant is chic but not filling.

Great brewery with locality as the focus. I love having Sumac right next to the brewery. I recommend coming early to avoid a wait time if you are eating a la carte.
