I arrived at 7:35 and there were plenty of tables open, but I was turned away because they close at 8pm and they didn’t want the kitchen staff to have to stay longer. I was staying at an Airbnb and told the hostess we had nothing to eat and no other place was open. Too bad, and she suggested that I drive 30 min, 50 minutes from my Airbnb, to find somewhere to eat in Culpepper. If you are open until 8pm, then you should seat customers until then. We were there 25 minutes before they close. We were tired from 10 miles of hiking that day. Ended up opening a can of tuna fish for dinner that night on my vacation. I would never ever go to this restaurant with such poor customer service.

We had a nice dinner for 6 here out on the covered patio and as 1st time visitors. The drive along rte. 211 is beautiful!

We ordered truffle cheese fries, meatballs, Brussel spouts and tomato salad for apps (shared). Flank steak, shrimp pesto pasta, and beef/bean burgers for mains. Also added peaches & cream, chocolate mousse/cake, and berry tart for desert. Plus a couple of drinks and you are at ~$300+/- (20% gratuity included for parties of 6+).

Vibe is relaxed and low key. Casual dress. Pleasant staff, good food, medium size portions, authentic and locally sourced.

Would love to hear/see an acoustic guitar/singer for some added ambiance on a Friday/Saturday night.

Given the chance, will be back again.

Service was slow. It took 10 mins for anyone to come to our table. Food was also slow, and mediocre. The restaraunt was the former home of the local high-school. We ate in the former gym, that reminded us of the gym in the movie dirty dancing. An OK place to go, but not if youre in a hurry.

After visiting several charming spots in Sperryville, my boyfriend and I really wanted to like The Black Twig, but the whole experience left a lot to be desired. The vibe was just
strange—neither cozy nor lively, more awkward than anything.

The drinks were a disappointment right out of the gate. My boyfriend’s old fashioned was drowned in ice to the point where it was more like watered-down bourbon than a proper cocktail.

Food was no better. The shrimp and pappardelle pasta barely qualified as a pasta dish—there were just scraps of mushy noodles swimming in the sauce, not the hearty, ribbon-like pasta you’d expect. The salmon on my boyfriend’s salad was poorly cooked as well: the ends were dry and overdone, while the center was near raw.

On top of all that, flies were buzzing around the dining area, and even worse, around the bar fruit caddy where drinks were being prepped. Hard to enjoy your meal while swatting at pests.

Service was adequate—our server got the job done—but there wasn’t much warmth or friendliness to the interaction.

Our two entrees and two cocktails plus tip brought our total bill to over $100. Overall, the combination of lackluster food, poorly made drinks, and an off-putting atmosphere (not to mention the high prices) makes it hard to recommend The Black Twig.
