Their brussels sprouts app is lovely, but their black bean burger is hands down one of the most disgusting things I have ever eaten. It was pale, wet, and absolutely flavourless. It was the consistency of paste. Their cocktails are great, their service is great, but man, that burger is shameful.
Really nice treat. Enjoyed the experience.

Tonight, we visited The Black Twig for the second time. The first time we visited was in summer 2025 and it was an awful experience (half the menu wasn’t available and they were understaffed so wait times were extensive). We decided to give them a second chance in case we caught them on a tough night…. Unfortunately, the experience was the exact same. My boyfriend had called the restaurant around 5:45pm to ask about wait times, if a reservation was needed, and what food options weren’t available due to our previous experience. The restaurant stated that there was no wait times, that a reservation was not needed since we would be there shortly, and that the only food items they were out of were chicken tenders and the poached salmon. We arrived at 6:30pm. When we showed up, we were asked to wait in another area as the wait was 15-20 minutes. We agreed and took a seat. Glancing at the menu, the menu was very selective as it was previously, but majority of the menu was completely different than it was in the summer which we felt was a bit strange? About 20 minutes later, we were seated at a table. It took about 10 minutes for our waiter to come over & ask about drinks. I asked the waiter if they could make a drink that was previously on their menu from the summer (a blackberry mojito); the waiter told me he had to check. He comes back and tells me “we actually don’t have those ingredients to make it”, (how do you not have rum?). I said okay and ordered a water as the new cocktail menu was not appealing to me. Next, he let us know that the poached salmon and chicken & rice was not available but that “more items” were “probably not available”. I asked him if he could check with the kitchen first before we ordered due to our previous experience. He leaves and shortly returns, letting us know that the capellini pasta & soup of the day were also unavailable and that they had no chicken or salad….. I started to get frustrated and our waiter could clearly tell. I explained our situation from the summer, he asked what menu item I wanted, and I stated the shrimp capellini. He leaves to talk to the chef and comes back, stating that the chef can make one more dish of the capellini, but the portion would be “small”. For $22 a plate, a “small” portion wasn’t going to suffice unfortunately. At this point, we were defeated. We explained to the waiter how frustrated we were considering this was our second time driving all the way out here and being left with disappointment. The only response we got was “I’m sorry”. I understand it isn’t the waiter’s fault and I am not upset with him in any matter. However, it is incredibly shocking to see this restaurant have decent ratings when we have visited twice during different parts of the year & are still left with disappointment each time. If you cannot provide the food listed on your menu for the hours you state that you are opened, then you should consider shortening your hours. I hope this restaurant reevaluates their practices and does better in the future.

This place is a class act. Had a long day on the trails and came here after for food and a beer. Extremely warm welcome and they over-delivered on service. Nathan was amazing and totally professional. I'll definitely be back when i'm out here again hitting the trails!

We sat in the auditorium. What a delightful find! Went with my 3 year old. Highly recommend the buffalo chicken (house-mde tenders) sandwich and the side salad is so healthy and fresh. Scratch-made blue cheese dressing was amazing. The manager and staff were so sweet and friendly. I’m coming here again ASAP. Free old-school jukebox to play. I was really enjoying the ambiance. Please go support this local business. Total gem!

Food was solid, but not extraordinary. I had the smash burger and it was good (too much cheese). I got a kids mac 'n cheese and it was made with jumbo shell noodles. It tastes fine, but the shapew through my kids off and as such, they didn't eat it. They would have preferred anything that looks like Craft's.
The location is beautiful, and we had a good time while we waited, with some room for the kids to run around after being in the car for hours.

I recently hosted my retirement party for about 100 guests. It could not have been more perfect! From the beginning, Abigail was incredibly accommodating, the food was delicious, the cocktails top-notch and the service was outstanding all night long. Every detail was handled with care and our guests were truly impressed. I'm grateful for how seamless and special they made my celebration! I highly recommend the Black Twig for any event!
Every. Single. Detail. Was fantastic! 👏👏 wait staff, cooks we watched/heard in the open kitchen, manager and most importantly FOOD!!! 10/10. Order the duck fat meatballs and eggplant rollotini

I arrived at 7:35 and there were plenty of tables open, but I was turned away because they close at 8pm and they didn’t want the kitchen staff to have to stay longer. I was staying at an Airbnb and told the hostess we had nothing to eat and no other place was open. Too bad, and she suggested that I drive 30 min, 50 minutes from my Airbnb, to find somewhere to eat in Culpepper. If you are open until 8pm, then you should seat customers until then. We were there 25 minutes before they close. We were tired from 10 miles of hiking that day. Ended up opening a can of tuna fish for dinner that night on my vacation. I would never ever go to this restaurant with such poor customer service.
