Chef Tan Chinese Restaurant is situated at Danor Plaza, near Maple Avenue in Vienna, VA, serving authentic and flavorful Hunan cuisine with well-balanced flavors. Its exterior is modest, but the interior offers a spacious, modern ambiance with friendly service. The restaurant boasts a diverse menu and generous portions. I appreciate discovering a Chinese eatery that serves traditional dishes, avoiding westernized or Americanized variants that tend to be overly sweet.
Some dishes we loved and highly recommend:
1. Steamed pork dumplings, truly homemade with authentic flavor.
2. Pressure-cooked pork belly: tender, juicy, and mildly spicy.
3. Iron plate Mongolian beef: similar to Korean bulgogi but less sweet and saucy—very good!
4. General Tso’s chicken: a classic dish with chicken balls in a subtly sweet and mildly spicy sauce.
5. Pumpkin seafood tofu soup: sizable enough to share, with balanced flavors from pumpkin and seafood that weren’t overpowering
6. Fried rice: among the best in Northern Virginia, with a deep, savory flavor from stir-fried onions.

Our 1st time here… a fabulous new spot in Vienna my sister found on YELP Hot & New !! The atmosphere is beautiful with great bar… we savored the pork fried dumplings — excellent !!! Many were enjoying the green / string beans as very fresh - the sautéed string beans. Try their Kung Pao chicken — we loved it too !!
Our server Summer was very attentive and helpful with the menu as it was our first time visit visiting…
A great find — filled with Chinese guests who love their traditional food !

Great authentic flavors the pork intestine, beef stir-fry were all delicious and go well with rice. It’s also rare to find a place where 13 people can sit comfortably at one big table. Would definitely come back.

Very authentic Hunanese food. We love the stinky tofu, the century egg with chili and eggplant. We love the authentic Hunan entrees as well.
Great for big groups and for authentic Chinese food.

Restaurantji Recommends
I enjoyed the food here, especially the clay pot tofu (you can request it with no meat) and the fish griddle both were delicious. The restaurant is nicely decorated, clean, and feels modern.
The only downside is the noise level. The music is a bit louder than I prefer when eating, and because the tables are spaced out, it was surprisingly hard to hear the person sitting across from me.
Overall, though, the food was really good, and it’s worth visiting if you don’t mind a livelier, louder atmosphere.
Booked a table a day in advance for a party of 12. Overall good variety. If you generally have home cooked meals, I'd recommend to ask for salt to be reduced by half at the time of ordering the food.

I ordered the hunan lamb, garlic bok choy, and chicken with millet pepper. Everything was so flavorful, spicy and delicious. We finished it all. The waitress was very helpful with giving advice on what to order.
