I’ve enjoyed most of the farm breweries in this part of Virginia, but Barking Rose has the best and most consistent beer…maybe because they are mostly Belgian beers made for people who actually like the taste of beer. Most of these small breweries seem to go for some odd seasonal choices and ten different (but not different) IPAs so if you catch them on a bad week or season you may only have one non-IPA/fruit beer to drink. But Barking Rose always has an excellent core selection and even when they do do seasonal beers they don’t just dump pumpkin spice in a lager and call it a day. (Pumpkin spice is vile.) I’m a snob and a bit of a traditionalist and I can always find 4 or 5 offerings on their menu that I can enjoy. Often at other small breweries (or even big ones) it’s one or two. Barking Rose is the place that I get my 128 oz growler filled because I won’t get tired of whatever I choose to fill it with. If you actually like the flavor of beer, then this is the place.

My husband and I had to try this place. So very glad we did. Kim is a sweetheart and easy to talk to.

Location and the beer

Dog friendly brewery with large beer selection and lots of indoor and outdoor seating. Very friendly staff as well as weekly and monthly events.

Brewery is good and they have a nice selection of beer (stouts, ales, lagers - not just IPAs). The place is super dog friendly, which is a BIG PLUS for us, they have live music which is wonderful and a large indoor place (also dog friendly). Only reason giving them four stars is because they could do better with the outdoor space and create more shade by planting trees and perhaps installing picnic table umbrellas, or just trees!! There’s too much grass that can be better utilized but that’s just my opinion :)

The BEER is superior. Truly
The rest doesn’t matter… but it’s pretty good too?

Wonderful indoor and outdoor space and staff is incredibly friendly and accommodating! We came with a large group of family (age range from 2-83) and had a great experience. I look forward to going back and would highly recommend Barking Rose!

If your a fan of Belgian beer, this place is not going to scratch that itch. Beer was awful.

Had such a great time with Jo Ann. She was welcoming and nice and friendly. She knew all the beers and gave perfect recommendations.

The beer is fantastic and there is always a nice atmosphere. A quick turn off of Route 29 is definitely worth the trip!

Conviction, Rosefest, Nanas Coffee Stout... all delicious! Beautiful grounds to sit outside and enjoy as well.

Double check your GPS, Google maps did a horrible job of routing.

This place deserves more visitors! The hubs and I "stumbled" upon this brewery and decided to stop so that our pup could get a break from the car. We were pleasantly surprised with the beers offered. I tried a flight and really liked all but one, which is unusual for me to like so many. The second time we went, they had new options, and again, they were surprisingly good. This place has seating inside and out, and live music. It's nothing fancy, but the owner is still trying to get the area put together. The venue reminds me of 6 Bears and A Goat (without the frisbee golf), rather than a hip joint like OBH, or a large place like the Farm Brewery. But if you go for the beer, you should give this place a try.

I feel like they could do so much more with this place. Just doesn't seem to be reaching its potential. The beer is pretty good on average. The traditional styles are better than the more variant styles. For instance, their dortmunder lager was very good but the pale ale was terrible. It's not even a pale ale by definition. The bar doesn't have any seating which I thought was kind of strange. There's a rail that goes along the side where you can sit however. There could also be a lot more outdoor seating. There could be TVs or other entertainment options. It has so much unrealized potential.
